Congrats to the girl, HOWEVER -

Not to lessen her on top of the world feeling, but..

This report shows India's obsession with single-point exams, ranks, etc. The GOAL, it seems is only to get a high RANK in some well-known exam. The title of FIRST RANK is the only thing Indians crave. Somehow

Let's consider the larger context: What does this mean? GRE is just ONE of the factors/criteria among many for admission into US engineering schools. Outside that single purpose, it has little meaning. Conversely, once an admission is secured, it's purpose is over. She might have a good GRE score, but when evaluating her admission many other factors too would play a big role. How is her undergrad reusults? Where did she graduate from? Did she do some extraordinary work or projects in engineering while studying? Did she do some research work and assist with some published paper?

Simply making a good GRE score the goal does not make her a better engineer, and therefore does not guarantee a good graduate school admission. All this will do is get her an edge over someone with equally similar achievements in everything else. If those are good, she can get a good admission.

So Indians as a whole, stop obsessiing over scores, ranks etc. for these qualifying exams and start concentrating on the underlying subjects and education. It is sad to to see an entire nation behaving like some houesewives obsessing over their kids exam scores and rank.

Please.... don't be a pessimistic. GRE scores does play a great role. Undergrad GPA, Recommendation letter and essay explaining why she would like to pursue her career are other important docs. I don't know where you got those extraordinary work or projects or publication for Grad admissions. So, stop being over critical. It doesn't cost you to say two good words for this girl.

being realistic. let's praise value, not just some exam results.

cheap no-good praises are plentiful on this board from people who dont know what this is, just that she got a rank in some exam, and that's good enough for praises to flow.

The same mentality that led the entire nation to go GAGA when some bihari kid fooled the entire nation by claiming that he had won FIRST RANK in some NASA test that did not even exist. First RANK and NASA (phoren) was good enough for media to go GA GA GA.

Well, then Ms. Ashwini

ought to take the CAT for entrance to the IIMs and see how far she can get!

The CAT is an entirely different ball game alltogether!

If she can as much as get an interview call from ONE of the top 6 or 7 IIMs, then she would impress much more than what she can with her perfect GRE score!

Have you succeeded at CAT? Why don't you max the GRE and prove your greatness!!

Devendra, this is the mistake Indians make: Maxing a score in GRE or such exams do not prove a THING. US schools judge the candidates using many factors, and having a good GRE score is something like the absolute minimum. Between a candidate with a perfect score and nothing much else, and a candidate with a lesser score but some considerable demonstration of initiative in the chosen engineering topic, guess who will get a better shot at admission?

Yes, I do know the criteria US universities use for admissions. I was admitted into one.
But the dismissive manner in which the girl's achievement is being addressed by the person commenting is unbecoming. Maxing the GRE may not be the be all and the end all but is nevertheless is an achievement.

US univ admissions are more common than you realise. A GRE score, no matter how good, does not prove ANYTHING of value, and comparing it to CAT, another similar worthless test, is worse.

How about judging her by her real accomplishments in her chosen field of study? Has she done ANYTHING innovative in her field? How is she as a student? In the US, gifted school kids do very interestin original research work. Her field is CS, which should not be limited by resources even in India - HAS she done ANYTHING in her 4 year undergad that qualifies as innovative? Simply preparing for one single test does not count.

These may seem to be personally against her, but they are not - these are simply meant to demonstrate the futility of judging a future computer scientist by a GRE score.

Anyway, I guess one cannot convince a nation enamored with scores and ranks and marks throguh a rediff comment.

I have a top score in the GRE, though not quite the 100 % that this lady has managed. (And I spent a total of FOUR days preparing for the GRE).

However, I also took the CAT, succeeded in it and completed my PGDM at one of the top IIMs.

The comparison between the extent of work that I had to do in preparation for the GRE and the CAT is extremely stark. I had to labour for months before I could consistently reach the required score levels in mock CATs!

The CAT is like a 3000 metre steeple chase with the country's cream (numbering several thousands) labouring hard to pip each other and yet all finishing half way or a little further in the race.

By contrast, the GRE is a short 25 metre sprint with thousands from India alone finishing the race well ahead of time and within a hair's breadth of each other! And none of those who are comfortable with it really need to exert themselves to finsh it!

It is this

What's problem with you guys? Is it because no one published your picture in rediff? Get a life and chill out. If you cannot praise someone for their achievements, at least have some decency and don't make such negative comments. We understand that you are a genius but let others have their share too.

Hope she takes up a career that engages her mind fully and does a PhD rather than ending up as a wasted opportunity working in some software firm. It is very heartening to read and rediff must publish news of this genre to inspire the youth to work hard and do well in life.Wish the person all the very best.

I mean seriously, Venky, guys like you tend to think that you have cracked the code of life by watching Three Idiots or reading Paulo Coelho. She likes Math or technology, she has proven it by doing well in it and she is going to US to pursue it further. Where is the waste of talent there? Why is it so difficult to accept that we are different from westerners and are really good at the Three Rs rather than being good at sports or arts? And US does give a very good opportunity in terms of entrepreneurial avenues as well when compared to India.
