Prof. Malavika need to go back to School
by Suresh Vijayan on Apr 22, 2013 09:43 AM  | Hide replies

Prof. Malavika before teaching, might be appropriate to learn:

The first line goes: we commit errors while writing as well

The word "Commit" should be avoided, more appropriate way to use is "We commit a Crime", it maybe "We make errors while we writing"

'Anyway' is the only correct word and not 'Anyways'. It is wrong style of typical US English.

there are so many mistakes done by seniors that even if a junior wishes to correct them he lands up in soup. I ruined knowledge of writing correct English because of this issue.

A FEW v/s FEW
by Deleep devasia on Apr 15, 2013 07:04 PM  | Hide replies

Another commonly used blunder.
Many people use 'few' to mean some, or less. But 'few' means "NO"!.
Example:
There are few students in the class room = There are NO students in the class room.

and,

There are A FEW students in the class room = There are very less students in the class room.

@devasia You have gone bonkers.

Buddy how can Few=No??? Were you in your senses when you wrote : "There are few students in the class room = There are NO students in the class room."

Go search your Rapidex once again.

Why do people post messages just for heck of it??

Don't be so harsh. it looks like he sincerely believes what he writes; that is the state of affairs outside the metros.

Re: A FEW v/s FEW

Wrong. The first means there are not many, i.e. you want to convey that the number is small. In the second, you want to emphasise that there are some; the number is not zero. And you should never say "very less"; it is not there at all in English. Correct equivalents are "very little", "very low" or "very few", depending on the context.

Mr. Chakravarti, I am confused. How do you differentiate not many and some in the above comment. It may be a thin line but I'm not getting it. Kindly elaborate. I agree with your comment on 'very less'.

Sorry for not being clear.
There are few means you want to emphasise that the number is small. There are a few means you are emphasising that the number is not zero.

Another common mistake: A few v/s few
by Deleep devasia on Apr 15, 2013 07:00 PM  | Hide replies

There are FEW students in the class room = There are no students in the classroom
There are A FEW students in the class room = There are some (very less) students in the class room.

I think, many people often use "few" to mean "a few" in our daily life.

There are few means there are not many.

There are a few means there are some, the number is not zero.

Your third statement is correct!
