Yes, that is a classic!

No self-introduction in Indian English is complete without this "auspicious" prefix to one's name!

"band", "childern"?

Yes, at least for your sake it should be "band" in India!

one more common mistake -Kindly/please
by Manish Pandey on Apr 01, 2013 02:09 PM  | Hide replies

Use of kindly & please at the same time. People often say or write both at the same time.

eg- Kindly please approve the same at the earliest.

Whereas pne should use only one, either kindly/please.

These kinds of "mistakes" are needed to be made in the correspondence with matter_c_h_0_d Indian government B_a_b_u_s who will not do their work unless they are made to feel like the latest Avatar of Lord Vishnu when interacting with them!

One thing is for sure
by Tom Jerry on Apr 01, 2013 02:04 PM

In my view, the basic grammar mistakes aside, the present day contamination of the English language in general and Indian English in particular, is largely due to the American English in a variety of forms: Hollywood films, American TV programmes, the Internet, the Internet chat lingo and the SMS lingo.

Of course, there is also our Indian tendency of crude transliterating from the mother tongue when speaking in English.

Common English usage errors
by Ajoy Chakraborty on Apr 01, 2013 01:31 PM  | Hide replies

"What's your good name?" should never be used, instead,"Could I (please) know your name?" or "May I (please) know your name?" or "Could you (please) tell me your name?" are better choices.

Every culture has its traits. The English spoken by Americans, Irish etc is different. There is nothing wrong with 'good name' as it is a literal translation of ' shubh naam' !
