What Rankings don't tell about elete universities
by Milan Moravec on Oct 06, 2012 04:19 AM

The public’s University of California harvests family savings, Alumni donations. Cal. ranked #1 public university total academic cost (resident) as a result of the Provost’s, Chancellor’s ‘charge resident’s higher tuition’. UCB tuition is rising faster than other universities.

Cal ranked # 2 nationally in faculty earning potential. Spending on salaries increased 29% in last six years. Believe it: Harvard College less costly.

University of California negates promise of equality of opportunity: access, affordability. Self-absorbed Provost Breslauer Chancellor Birgeneau are outspoken on Cal. ‘charging residents much higher’ tuition.

Birgeneau ($450,000) Breslauer ($306,000) like to blame the politicians, since they stopped giving them their entitled funding. The Cal. ‘charge instate students higher tuition’ skyrocketed fees by an average 14% per year from 2006 to 2011 academic years. If they had allowed fees to rise at the same rate of inflation over past 10 years fees would still be in reach of middle income students. Breslauer Birgeneau increase disparities in higher education, defeat the promise of equality of opportunity, and create a less-educated work force.

Additional state tax funding must sunset. Prop 30, 32, 38. The sluggish economy, 10% unemployment devastates family savings. Simply asking for more taxes (Prop 30, 32) to spend on self-absorbed Cal. leadership, inefficient higher education pract

Dont be fooled by this Ranking system Vs Indian Universities.
by kuttichathan mydear on Oct 05, 2012 09:56 PM  | Hide replies

The university system in these countries are very different from India for various reasons and the comparisons and rankings will make the Indian system look very bad. While India can improve a lot in many areas the current system refelects the realities in India and rightfully so.

The main difference is most indian universties do not co-locate centers of excellence. We do not have engineering colleges arts science medicine economics law all in one campus/university. The ranking system is skewed towards these in addition to looking for some even more skewed criteria such as Nobel prize (heavily political award).. Rhodes Scholars (US Centric).. Field awards (mostly given to westerners in science)..

So while we all scream about improvements needed in indian universitie, its surely wouldnt hurt to acknowledge the gains the system has made, and it should not be because of this ranking system. Indian universities have improved in providing networking, jobs, and needed skills to a large number of people compared to colonial days. Contributions to basic research is still only proportional to investment but the priority is currently differnet in India eg. to provide more doctors rather than understand gene sequences.. this ranking is ir-relevant to India.

Well said! Indians university may not match the infrastructures... But if they consider the competitiveness as one matrix, may be it is right @ the top. Very few seats in good colleges for a country on 100 crore.

Yes, we are a class apart. We may fit in Mars or other planets. India shining or India rotten? It makes no difference which one you choose.

Grants , Innovations required.
by prasad on Oct 05, 2012 05:38 PM

India has got really bright students. Its just that our universities are not standard. The universities must focus on Innovations and path breaking Research & Inventions only then we can reach there. and for this to happen our government need to provide grants. It's a combined effort.

HARVARD IS A GREAT UNIVERSITY; BUT CHICAGO & OXFORD RANK BETT
by Kabeer on Oct 05, 2012 03:31 PM

Harvard undoubtedly is a great university across almost all disciplines.

But Harvard's ranking all along is also based on how its students are placed after graduating from Harvard.

Since, Harvard traditionally attracts both bright and wealthy & socially well placed all its students are always well placed; bright students because of their merit and the wealthy and socially well placed ones based on their pedigree and social networks.

But if one has to judge purely on academic merit in my reckoning Chicago and Oxford take the prime positions and ofcourse Stanford as well.

Regarding Indian universities, except IITs and IIMs and almost all Medical colleges, you dont see any real education in any of the so called universities.

All these Indian universities are infested with caste politics and sexx for marks professors (sic)

Indian Universities have a chance to improve
by nag raja on Oct 05, 2012 03:18 PM

Definitely it is possible for Indian Universities to get a position within 200 if the universities and IITs cancel all reservation policies and admission should be made on merit basis.

Why no IIT's?
by Kalank Sharma on Oct 05, 2012 03:16 PM  | Hide replies

Why the IIT's don't feature in the top 50 list. They are considered to be the best and most sought after universities in India. AN IIT degree is highly rated even in foreign countries.

The ranking is based on infrastructure, quality of faculty, research and innovation etc. Unfortunately, IITs excel at none of these. IITs are known all over the world not because of their superior educational system - but rather because of the genius of students who graduate from IITs. The IIT entrance examination filters students on entry. And once you select brilliant students they will do fine anywhere they go.

What India should do to feature in this list..
by subhasis banerjee on Oct 05, 2012 03:12 PM

India should motivate private bodies to fund education. Number of engineering and medical colleges are being run by private bodies in India. Few of those institutes are earning fame day by day. But unfortunately no such endeavour is yet seen in case of general education.
There is no alternative to private endeavour in general higher education. What government can do is it can make a level playing ground for all educational institutes. In colleges studens are charged a platry sum. On the contrary they have to pay handsomely to study in private colleges. In addition government does not normally award scholarship to students studying in private colleges. This system should be changed. And in my opinion would bring sea change in India. Government should categorize students by their merit and means and award them scholarship accordingly. They should be allowed to choose their colleges, private or government. The present system which funds each and every students studying in government institutes should be discontinued. Because it not only makes the situation uncompetitive for private bodies but also makes student unwary of how much actually being spent for their education. They don't feel the value of money.

How much does it costs ?
by satyadev on Oct 05, 2012 02:43 PM  | Hide replies

Nothing is free in USA. Against each rank the fee collected must be indicated to give an idea as to how costly it is to become premier institution.
