by ajoy kumar on Sep 13, 2011 12:28 PM

In my college days I wanted to do Ph.D. But could not. Now I can pursue this Ph.D.

The article is short and sweet. Easy to remember. Hope easy to follow too!!!! Thank you Mr. Iyer.

measurement of success

i can not just agree with such comment, a success comes in always on the measurement of sound of line in the practical field, there is no need of PhD degree, it is right that there is very much need of higher academic qualification to go for the top, but when our knowledge only put to your books, not putting its eccentricity in 1:2 in practical then only to move about in 1:1 eccentricity that is equivalent to 0 of your higher education , so first of all what is most important is that how to apply ourselves into the practical field to get the success.

You don't need Ph.D for success but you certainly need a lot of LUCK and guts! Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Steve Jobs ...examples. Success comes when people are willing to take risk and who takes risk? One who doesn't have anything to lose. However, higher qualification is always desireable.

Winning with progress
by siva none on Sep 13, 2011 05:35 AM

Some years ago I wrote in these columns the following on similar discussions:
50 years ago most people started working after school pass. They gained both work experience and career developments.Almost 95 % of them retired as MDs and Group GMs with multi-nationals.Few are still around and I learned a lot from them. Most said one can succeed without MBAs and NOT without common sense.

phd is required for both people with and without degrees.. if one really wants to excel in his field.. one can also count plenty of successful people and enterpreneurs with degrees..

Don't misguide people by telling the story of some exceptions.
It is true that there are exceptions in all areas but these are not the trend.
Thousands of people are forced to do low level job just because of lack of education.
In share market many people will misguide that rakesh jhunjhunwala became millionaire due to stock market and the truth is most of retail investors loose money in stock market.

Agree 100% with you.

If you are well educated, in most cases you will have decent job and comfortable life. If you have dedication in addition to good education, that will help you achieve greater success.

On the contrary, you can find few exceptions of less educated individuals achieving great success through their dedication to work and passion. The number of such instances are very limited. Expecting to be successful ignoring education quoting few rare examples may not help much. Education will do no harm......if you are dedicated and passionate about your goal, education will supplement your efforts.
