The limit may not be reasonable . I feel the limit should be increased atleast to Rs 2 lacs per person . Being a frequesnt traveller , I have also seen that people really dont bother to shop so much unless it is very unique as every item is available in India. Having said this ... the rule of the land has to be respected and followed be it a PM or an ordinary man. So Bipasha cannot be given any leaway .
This bimbo could have paid the tax and avoided getting detained. After all she earns sevaral time more for one strip-tease act for a couple of minutes! Why are these celebrities always so unwilling to pay up taxes and duties without being forced to? Most film stars pay up income tax only when forced to by the IT department. The nation saw the spectacle of Sachin Tendulkar creating a controversy by asking for CD waiver for his Ferrari car which anyway was gifted to him.
Visit house of any officer of Customs, Excise etc at any point of time to find out suitcase full of hard Currency notes of Rs 500/- and Rs 1000/ denomination, which is thousand times higher than the known source of Income. Our CVC, or CBI is either toothless or they are influenced by some one to conduct any raids on the houses of these corrupt officers. In fact these corrupt offficer feel that demanding bribe is the only duty which they have to perform.
Limits, licenses, govt approvals and these kind of things have only achieved in increasing corruption and cheating. It is the Indian propensity of elders/bosses/govt trying to control everything that has given rise to rampant corruption.
Now, why should there be a limit to what one brings with oneself from abroad. Everything should be declared and most of the items must be free of any duties/tax. If a nation wants to discourage import of certain items then they can simply increase duties on those.
The govt needs to do what it is meant to do - that is, it has to govern. It has to remove its dirty finger from everything else. Controls are required - but minimised. Some licenses are required - but minimised.

Agreed, unnecessary and complicated regulations/ restrictions stall free-trade and encourage corruption. We should get rid of them and onl have restrictions on goods of national security and importance.
Also, restrictions should be on quantity of goods not their monetary value, as it is very difficult to put an accurate price on items when bought in other currencies.
