Limits, licenses, govt approvals and these kind of things have only achieved in increasing corruption and cheating. It is the Indian propensity of elders/bosses/govt trying to control everything that has given rise to rampant corruption.
Now, why should there be a limit to what one brings with oneself from abroad. Everything should be declared and most of the items must be free of any duties/tax. If a nation wants to discourage import of certain items then they can simply increase duties on those.
The govt needs to do what it is meant to do - that is, it has to govern. It has to remove its dirty finger from everything else. Controls are required - but minimised. Some licenses are required - but minimised.

Agreed, unnecessary and complicated regulations/ restrictions stall free-trade and encourage corruption. We should get rid of them and onl have restrictions on goods of national security and importance.
Also, restrictions should be on quantity of goods not their monetary value, as it is very difficult to put an accurate price on items when bought in other currencies.
These customs fellows are simply stupid and downright negligent when they catch people like Bipasa for such small amount whereas they allow mafia politicians criminals and stooges of Dawood to own and summgle 1000 of crores....Dawood family is running illegal money racquet and owning 1000 of crores in Mumbai...Customs should concentrate on them...
Catch the big fishes..do not harrass law abiding citizen...
its not coincidence.... the complete Customs & Excise is a Corrupt Organisation without an exception.... They keep the limit low so they can harass & in turn make money. its simple....
they catch celebrities once in a while to show they are doing their job.
the cut goes everywhere right from top to bottom.....
this is only potential to increase bribe money. imagine paying only 3k or less or whatever as per aukaad as bribe instead of 12k. what about import duty on cars? and other stuff. $553 of goods is nothing even for a middle class coming from abroad
Of course, looks like rediff has Bipasha Basu as an Idol to chance custom laws as Anna Hazare is an Idol for stopping corruption.
Question should have been: Bipasha's customs goof up: was it justified... If rich can't pay tax...politicians continue playing with tax.. then do you think common people are dumb???
Problem is corrupt officials don't want these limits to go up, as then people can bring in stuff without being worried about being harassed by those goons.
Our Indian Govt. are not got public but for Govt. employees to make money. Yes all Govt. orzns. customs, police, judiciary, muncipality,RTO, Media and Immigration are sucking the blood out from public, Common man is afraid of approaching police and courts unless its unavoidable. Is this what our govt. wants.

Every law in every country is implemented by officers. I do not know why such a hue and cry is being made because someone was dumb enough to not know the limits. Incidentally it was not the first time that she was caught thus (by her own admission). I think the officer did the right thing. Changing the limit is another issue and if Bipasha wishes to take the lead, she is welcome to.

Also problem is people do not know what the rule are, what their rights are and worst no clear way of making sure that their rights are not violated.
