Agreed all vegetables have their share of health benefits and so does potatoes. Having said that, this vegetable may not be suitable for a large section of society. It is essentially high and carbohydrates which should be taken in very moderated way in an ever growing sedentary society who dont burn out calories through physical activites.
Potatoes are staple food in western world where it is used in liey of rice/wheat and not taken along with rice/wheat. If you take potatoes, just skip equal amount of rice that way - else do not ever take potatoes.

Sigh! I am a Biochemist and am aghast at the lack of knowledge with regard to Body Metabolism in the Public. All right you might not have been trained in or taught basic physiology but since you are Diabetic it is your duty to educate yourself properly in this regard. Sugar in the body is not dangerous for anybody, a healthy person, or a patient. The body has an inbuilt mechanism for maintaining Sugar Levels within a certain range, no more and no less. This ensures that all of the cells in the body are able to carry out their funtions. In normal persons excess Sugar in the Diet, is converted by the Body to stored Fat. In patients with Diabetes the body (Pancreas, or Sweet Bread, as it is also known) does not produce a sufficient amount of Insulin, the hormone that serves as a Signal Molecule to body cells to regulate Sugar Levels. In some forms of Diabetes the Body does indeed produce Insulin in sufficient levels, however the Body Cells have become insensitive to this signalling molecule. Thus for the particular type of Diabetes that you have, you must watch your diet very carefully, for caloric intake, as well as intake of the various food groups i.e. Carobhydrates (i.e. Sugars), Proteins, and Fats. Do talk to a Nutritionist who will prescribe a complete Diet Plan. Don't be discouraged, it is possible to lead a normal life, even with Diabetes, but you do have to watch your Diet very carefully. Thanks Dr Singh for the info...i know this is not the forum, but just in case you would shed some light...could you please let me know whether there is any particular food items or tonics / medicines that help one's digestion, without any side effect? Since there are many like me whose job demands hopping from place to place all day long, our food habits go haywire...at least we must ensure that our digestive system is strong. Thanks in advance.

I like the mashed potatos served in many counters in US. They are not only good, but very healthy too. If we eat 150 grams of mashed potato, with 2 grilled tomotows, one orange juice, one boiled egg and a cup of tea without milk and sugar are best and considered as healthy break fast. If you just want to add, a slide whole wheat brown bread and you are ready for a healthy day. Still hungry add cup of conflakes and a bit of cold milk without sugar. Enough and I bet it just takes care of everything and no fat formation.
