Thanks for the information

Dear Mr.Vijay Padiyar,
Through this article I came to know about the difference between MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 technology.
But you also mentioned that if the DTH operator reduces the bit rate of the individual channels he can fit more channels into a single transponder's bandwidth and then the MPEG 4 audio/video quality could be worse than MPEG 2. Is there any easy way to find out if this is being done by them? Please tell us.
Thanks again.

Strange Coincidence

Barring Dish TV, which was the first private DTH operator, all other companies have links to 2G

Videocon, Airtel, Big TV and Sun DTH (run by maran brothers) all have been benefitted by 2G.

Any idea on how much these companies paid for Licences

Also note...most complaints are of Tata Sky..they do not hear the customer care..Tata has started this..but they are unable to provide sale after service...Amir is advertising this..because he is being paid...but he do not give guarantee that you will get good service after sale..customer will be heard..I know many people and even my relatives..who had Tata Sky but now switched to Airtel..Videocone..Customer care is better of Videocone followed by Airtel..Dish I don't hv much idea but yes..there are complaint about Dish also...

Excellent article.

However, could the author (or someone who knows) give quality wise ranking of the various DTH operators? Nowadays rankings are freely given on the net and it should not amount to any breach of ethics.

Cheated by reliance Big tv
by navalore gopakumar on Feb 11, 2011 12:45 PM  | Hide replies

After reading Shivpujan's article below, i need to bring to the reader's attention, the modus operandi of Reliance Big Tv. Their marketing came to our house and promised most of the channels i wanted at 130 rs pm and took 1400 rs as installation. However when the installation guys came the next week, i was in for a shock, not only had I to pay an other rs. 800 for installation(earlier amount is only registration) but that their basic pack of rs.130 doesnt have any of my channels. I had to shell out 375 rs every month just to watch my channels. I felt cheated and repeatly complained to the big tv guys...but to no avail.
Finally I am back to my cable wala...where i get to watch all the channels at only rs.175.

From BIG TV 2 executives visited my home and talked about their schemes. They said to avail connection, I would need to pay Rs.2800 Rs.1000 Rs.1000 Rs. 250 for various costs. They added that, if I can show them any ID proof, they will waive 1000 and if I show residence proof one more 1000 will be waived. They also said that if my cheque book transaction no. is 10, 11, 32 and one more no., they will waive 250 also. In addition they will give one connection extra. They also promised 5 months free subscription. The other connection can be anywhere in India. The subscription cost after 5 months is jus Rs. 117 58 (half for 2nd connection).

They even said I can watch new movies by paying Rs. 50 after 18 days. I told them that, I will call them if interested

I checked internet last week and the movie released in DTH was Rajneeti (after 6 months of release). And even the cost of STB seems to be different

Also the packages seem to be confusing. So I decided against Big TV

Cheating by Tatasky.
by shivpujan on Feb 11, 2011 10:46 AM  | Hide replies

Since the children mostly like to watch different channels, i got Tatasky DTH for two TVs. I paid for full one year subscription for both the TVs, but within few months Tatasky enhanced their rates for second TV and reduced full year subscription to 8 months unilaterally. I told their customer care that the increased rates should be applicable after contracted period of one year was over, but they did not listen. Nobody except their customer care executives is approachable for redressal of cusomers grievances. So, I decided to go for airtel Tv which I find cheaper and better. Do others have similar experience with Tatasky?

Two years back, I took Tata Sky connection. They had few tamil channels only, but promised that within 2 months, they will add atleast another 6, but it never happened.

I want to share one more stuff. I used to watch DD Pothigai regularly. One day, suddenly they removed this. I called call centre and they said, channel has been removed due to poor viewership.

Guess then DD officials complained about Tata Sky for taking it out (All DD channels have to be given compulsorily as per rule). Then after 3 days, Tata Sky brought the channel back. Their message said 'Due to overwhelming customers request, they are bringing back DD Pothigai'. LoL

I forgot to something. They jacked up the prices too. I felt irritated and have taken out the connection. In my opinion Cable TV is the best

I agree to the core... These DTH guys play with ppl and offers. Basic difference apart from technology - DTH are product based, once they sell dont expect any services but CableTV is a service based concern. A good CableTV will do for me ;)

TATAsky does not resolve the queries of its subscriber.

Even if you log the request only, it is "resolved" without any reason or answer.

I wanted TATAsky to give me option to delete individual channels from the "garbage" which came with my "package".

Other workaround can be to increase the "favourite" count to 200 or more.

But nothing happened.

They offered lot of free games channels during offer and now they have made it paid.
they offered multiple south languages in their Ultra plan - now they have made it paid.
They just lure and trap you!
