Your teacher's best advice!
by varadarajulu a on Sep 03, 2011 11:18 AM

The best advice I got was from my Research Supervisor, late Prof.S.V.J.Lakshman. He used to say "Never postpone a thing which you can perform today and which is possible". I am still following his golden words and I succeeded in my life. I owe my position as another teacher only due to his words. In my opinion, a teacher should come to the level of the student while teaching so that there will be a direct communication between the teacher and the taught. A real teacher should always encourage the students and bring out the hidden talents. In my personal experience as a pedagogy, 99% of the students are good and given a chance, they will excel in studies. What they require is proper encouragement and motivation. A real teacher is always rememberred and respected by his wards.

My teacher's best advice
by vaibhav choksi on Sep 01, 2011 08:31 PM

Long back one of my teacher said 'In coming days you will have to run; even if you have to stay where you are. Just imagine what you would need to do to stay ahead of competition.' I still remember this and feel right. This is a good subject of teachers advise.

Some teachers are just too bad.

Guys please don't feel bad by what I am writing here, but there is a very dark side to teachers too. I for one was quite a good student, and by God's grace, I had a very good and prosperous family to support me during my days as a student, but I remember there were a few boys back in my school who were from a poor background. They used to be unfairly targeted by all teachers from the principal downwards. They were taunted on their backgrounds, punished disproportionately, and much worse. If you torture a kid mentally in his/her formative years, the scar remains always. The hurt they suffer in those years might inhibit them from achieving what they could otherwise have done with some normal effort. When I say my teachers ill treating my colleagues in those days, I never realized the perversity of what they were doing. But now when I look on it as a third person, I am just shocked. If I use that kind of language in my workplace, I would be immediately thrown out. So while the ideal teacher is god incarnate, there are too many rotten mangoes in the teaching profession. It's not just one or two of them, there are many. We need to take off our rose tinted goggles and take a real look at teachers.

Hello Anil,

What you have mentioned is so true. Teachers sometimes put themselves in the position of judges and impose their rules onto the students. I have seen this right from the kindergarden to the post graduate teachers. I just wished if they took the effort of stepping down to the students level rather than having an 'holier than thou' approach - the world would have more educated people.

Well I just have to say this to those you have come across in the garb of the word teacher .
These people obviously were not teachers in the true sense of the word . Teaching a subject is just "one of those things" that a teacher does . A teacher is supposed to shape the life of a student .
I am a teacher myself and I am ashamed to read these responses about the people who have tarnished the word . I would like to apologise on their behalf on this day .
I have fond memories of all my teacher - I am sure you may have the same too . Let us celebrate this day together .

Salutes to Gur!

I still remember very discreetly the advice-rather an imposition made by my favourite teacher to whom I was equally a favourite student. He always wished & expected his pupils to mug up what he dictated as notes on the commerce theory & commercial geography subjects taught in those days in English. Some people who grew up later in life failed to understand the wisdom behind his insistence to mug up every thing word by word;they feel & also say that they had felt then too, that it was very unfair on his part to ask his students to mug up without understanding its meaning.O.K.as a matter of reasoning,it may sound well. But the intention behind what he asserted was that being students of Telugu medium till the previous class,it was NOT possible to understand first & then mug up & hence he was insisting that let the student first get it by heart & in the process of doing so,there also arises a desire to know its meaning & in course of time that too would occur. He was 100% correct in his approach & attitude of strict discipline which used to make him now & then slap the student also.In fact, that fear is necessary for any student at the school age;this view does not meet, however, with favour by many modern educationalists. And the theory of \"Dandam Dashagunam Bhaveth\" or told in English in some other way as \"spare the rod & spoil the child\"held good at least for our student days.My salutes to my Guru Sri Gopi Reddy g
