Is there anything to be proud?
by EmKay on May 28, 2010 07:53 AM  | Hide replies

It is wonderful that these kids have made it to the IIT.
For the sole purpose of "cracking" the IIT exam, we are taking bunch of intelligent and hard working kids and ruining their ability to "think". IITs then take these hard working above average and sometimes gifted kids and turn them into duds of the scientific community. India has done very poorly on a global scale when it comes to producing technology leaders. This can be mainly attributed to "rote" learning style which is devoid of liberal and critical thinking. The amunt of intellectual property and innovation produced by Indian educational institutions are truly 3rd world.

You are right as we have not still cracked the making of "chips" on the lines of Intel and AMD of
California,USA.

when you say Technology leaders
Mr Narayana Murthy and Nandan Nikenni (Infosys),Arun Netravalli Bell Labs(New jersey),Vindo khosla(Sun mIcrosystems co-founder),Motwani(mentor to google founder sergei) etc are all from IITs and leaders in technolgy .do you need more examples.

I think IIT B.Tech syllabus is all problem oriented with lots of assignments and still the faculty in IITS is good.

I think what the problem is in ordinary engineering colleges there is a shortage of quality faculty and certain universities might not have adeqaute lab facilities and syllabus is outdated that is they have not updated to keep pace with technology for example sake:electronics moved from diodes and triods to transistors to asic chips but if still the syllabus has diodes and triods that will be a disaster.
So finding good Faculty ,excellent lab facilities and good syllabus will produce good quality candidates.

Ever since I heard about the Super 30 a few years back,I have been awed by the vision of both the founders of the pogramme. They have broken so many preconceived notions year after year and have shown us that intelligence is universal and if given an opportunity and good guidance there are many deserving students who can make it big. Also elite institutions like IIT's are not just for students from well off families,it is just a matter of giving an equal platform to everyone.
Once again congratulations to both the teachers and students for this great success!!

Hi guys
people here are saying brain power does that mean only certain individuals born with it others not please clarify.
What is wrong in hardwork and cracking a exam .I think still IIT-JEE entrance exam contains problem based questions to solve?someone below says memorizing I think he is wrong I do not think the exam is based on theoritical knowledge it is applying that knowledge to solve a problem.Hradwork leads to practice and practice leads to quick solving within the time.
Also if the theory about brain power is true can it be proved in working life ? I mean those brain powered graduates should do more in their working life than the other so called non brain power graduates can it be proven? Ithink it is just a myth.In the end who joins companies and gets involved in Research and Development with products.Intel Pentiums original manager and designer is Vinod Dham but he is from Delhi College of Engineering.Chandrayans mission director is from Anna University. So in essence a degree helps but there is lot more after that to do in rest of life is it not?
Also did we know the famous proverb "Genius is one percent inspiration and ninty nine percent precipitation" .IIT degree defintly lays out foundation but still one has to continue to be innovative throught woking life Am I correct?
So I feel a bit disappointed in peoples comments that it is hardwork no brain power .Also please give some due credit to Super30 even if they got through res

Memorizing is useless these days when one has access to all the knowledge (internet) through smart phones which people carry all the time.

Whats important is creativity and lack of it is precisely the reason IIT/IISc's etc. are at the bottom when it comes to innovation.

Just look at the number and quality of publications from these institutes.

Even in software (open source or otherwise) Indians are at bottom. Just some time back Pakistani and Chinese hackers shut down so many Indian sites. Our IT guys dont even have the know how to give them a befitting reply.

That's true..

People should appreciate the constructive work and not the destructive work.

A minute is sufficient to bringdown the bigstructures like WTO with a criminal mind but to construct it requires many years and great amount of engineering knowledge.

Backdoor Entry
by ashish on May 28, 2010 01:09 AM  | Hide replies

Well what is the big deal! If not 100%, may be 95% of these guys have got the entry via backdoor (so called reservation) and IITs struggle to fill up the full quota of reserved list because there is not enough number of people from this group hitting the cut off which for reserved list candidates is sometimes as lows as 5-7 out of 100 in each subject.

So,where as a good initiative and comendable social service.. there is nothing to be prooud of the achievement..

Its defenitely a good achievement, even if they got thru reservation. At least thru this, they are letting the poor ppl get a fair chance... And regarding the question of whether or not they survive the 4 years, well its absolutely upto them and how brilliant/hard working they are!

children and their stupid parents all getting into this IIT race.

If you make a monkey join coaching classes from 9th and make him study 10 hrs a day then even he can clear JEE.

But is it good for all round development of kids. Are they getting enough exercise, social exposure etc. or are they fat/unfit, eye glass wearing social outcasts low on confidence cant talk properly to the opposite sex just like that looser Chatur in 3 idiots.
