who said speaking English makes a person literate. ACCording to india's definition speaking and writing in any language makes a person literate. Even if a person speaks english and can not read in any language including in english he is an illiterate.

Joke of the day. English is their mother toungue..of course they will know how to speak it..
u should know how to read & write & do very basic math to be called literate..

India everyone speaks their own mother tounge ..so is everyone literate ..?

Everyone missing the point
by Jitesh Agrawal on Mar 19, 2010 01:55 PM  | Hide replies

It seems everyone is missing the point here what Sibal actually is saying.

He says "India will have most educated people by 2030" i.e. in absolute terms, when we are growing in population the way we are it no surprise what he has said.

Mr. Sibal will you tell what percentage of people in India would be educated by 2030????

The percentage of those who have completed at least school education would still remain far below the percentage in China (not to speak of those in the developed nations) !!

I think Sibbal does not know meaning of educated people.

In India to define educated people is very difficult and critical. For example

1. Ulta Pradesh CM Mayawati is having degree of B.A and B. Ed, so what would be the definition of education consedring mayawati as example.
2. Is Educated means just working /Service Class ? if No then why many engineering/management graduates working in Pvt organization just pass their time by staying in offices more than 12 hours a day and they waste more electricity/water/papers and thus creates national loss.
3. Why people those travels by Air , keep on their mobile switch even after repeateate request of airlines and at least more than 10 times it is announced in aircraft. Do the people do not understand if they are educated?
Also why they make crowed even before aircarft come to halt and gets up from their seat just like railway ?

4. Why in parliyament people makes noise if they are educated. In parliyament both educated, uneducated, illetrate, all religion, cast, states people are there even after that they make such noise why ?

it means education has no value in India . It can give employement somewhere in companies or sector and there is basically no difference in educated and uneducated people in India. hence claiming most educated people by 2010 is just making fool to already 95 % fools of india.

by tls mani on Mar 19, 2010 01:53 PM

We will have so called educated middle class churned out by the universties and colleges promoted by the Politicians ruling and about to rule. Most of them will not be employable for skills or dearth of jobs. It is a shame.
Our Ministers are still dreaming

a wise advise
by R Balasubramanian on Mar 19, 2010 01:49 PM  | Hide replies

Its good to dream but not foolishly. Sibal should remember a wise saying KNOW YOUR LIMIT AND THEN GO BEYOND IT.
If he is really sincere in his views he should improve the education system in rural areas and not keep concentrating only on IIMs and IITs. 40% of rural children have still not seen the light of education and in many villages even primary education is still a distant dream and children have to walk few miles to reach a school located in other village to study - yes ofcourse if there is no caste rivalry not involved.
Action Speaks Louder than Words. Let Sibal Act and see to it that it happens even if UPA is not back in power next term.
