Re: encourage cycling

When more and more people start using cycles for daily travel, I'm sure the government will take notice and plan roads and other support infrastructure for cyclists. It will save huge amount of fossile fules and help reduce our carbon footprint. Keep our environment polution free, and last but not the least, keep us fit.

You are right! Even try at Aamchi Mumbai's hot and humid climate. I am sure anyone will leaves this option behind.
But if few folks are doing it really then kudos to those alternate thinkers!

If everybody uses a bicycle instead of a car, I'm pretty sure the polution, the humidy and and teh heat will come down to bearable. On teh other hand, if everybody drives a car, soon, nobody will be able to breathe.
If only our roads had been safe, the vehicle drivers behaved responsibly - many would take to cycling. Even if minimally, that would contribute towards reduction of carbon imprint.
My German boss used to come to office either jogging or bicyclinng everyday, 8 miles from his house. Thats why he took part is the city marathon every year. He would come to the office jogging in a micro shorts (obsene in Indian standard) and a vest, and then he would take a shower, change dress, and became thorough gentleman and professional for the rest of the day. My boss in India comes in his Octavia or BMW everyday like a gentleman, and rest of the day he behaves like a filthy S_hit...haha!

Agree we have to have such aminities. But then our boss will ask to stay back in office since we have everything in office :)
Cycling is good but if u go to office by cycle ur collegues and office management look down up u I travel by public transport to office and when I asked my boss for increement he said u travel by bus why u need increments I will give increment to those who come by car to office as they add to repution of the office

If you like it just do it. I am DGM of a company, but i like to use public transport than owning a vehicle. Few in my organisation look down at me, but i don't care

you yourself are suffering from that complex hence you cant stand tall and show up your boss for what he is...
I agred that biking is good but only if you have good weather. One can't ride in Chennai which is always hot. I was biking some 50 miles when I was in Washington, DC because they have a trail which is 45 miles long one side. But biking to work is not a easy job because you need to have biking lanes and there are always danger of accident since no one cares about bikers. Unless there is a separate lane for biking, it is not a good idea to ride one, rest is personal preference.

You'd be surprised to know how many people *do* ride in and around Chennai! And from 2 years in Bangalore traffic on a cycle, its way safer than motorbikes, and way less stressful, and quicker, than cars!

Indian roads are very unsafe for bicycles, let us accept it. Going to office by bicycle in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chenna is a crazy idea. One needs separate bicycle lanes for that. I have seen such excellent lanes in Netherlands, Germany, UK and China. There are clear marks for bicyclers, and it is unsafe to enter those lanes for pedestrians, since one ca ride the bicyle there with moderate speed.

From my actual experience in Bangalore, can't just "accept it" when the reality is not nearly there.
