But while in Kerala, be careful of
- Pick pocketers
- Anti-social elements.
- Robbers
- Criminals.
- Cold blooded people.
- Eve teasers.
- Drunkards.
- Dangerous policemen.

et al...

God's own country.

From the posts I see below, I believe people have a terrible misunderstanding about Kerala. I guess about 90% of the people who have commented have not even visited Kerala. Sure, commies have given a tough time, but then every state has their own version of these political bandits.. You have mayawati, MNS and what not.. In terms of beauty, I guess Kerala would be second only to Kashmir ( again this is a personal opinion, as I've visited Kashmir). 14 districts offer you multiple degrees of experience ranging from backwaters to farmlands to high ranges. And the food has been rated very highly by international food magazines. In fact, mallu breakfasts are considered among the healthiest in the world. Go to Kerala and experience God's own country for yourselves. Mallus are a different breed and can give most of you guys a run for your money. As dev has mentioned in a post below, mallus occuppy prominent posts in every walk of life. And I also saw someone mention about kerala being dirty. If thats the case, you shd take a look at TN, Bihar and various parts of UP in addition to other states. No state is perfect man.. and we all collectively form India. So whether you like it or not, we're all brothers and sisters :) lol.... Visit Kerala man, experience it yourself and then comment.. and while you're in Kottayam, visit KARIMBINKALA for some amazing toddy and seafood :)

Excuse Mr geby jacob, the purpose of u posting here is to talk abt ur state since someone had a wrong idea abt it. If so u shud be commenting nly abt the gud things in Kerala & the reasons thru which u feel proud abt ur state and etc., Bt as much as I read ur post, Therez no point in u mentioning & comparing with other states (TN, Bihar) and push ur state up...This is not the way to talk for your state. If u say the positive things abt ur state, dat itself talks and therez no need for u comparing it with other states and later mentioning - (No state is perfect man.. and we all collectively form India. So whether you like it or not, we're all brothers and sisters) doesnt hold meaning...FYI, my parents are from 2 different states - Kerala & TN. So I have lived in both the places and both are really gud.....

tourism
by Dev on Jan 30, 2010 03:14 PM  | Hide replies

kerala def has tourism potential..but it has to learn many things in tourism. to think that is just gr8 and that the world must bow before it..this is not right attitude.
in fact kerala has right natural environment but keralites must bow to world (atleast learn from world).
also just thinking tourism is only industry will not do..other industries need to be developed.tourism is just one segment.

really kerala is blessd in many ways..but only attitudes and management need change.and these...definitely...absolutely...need change!!!

And that attitude better be not one that expects one's fellow countrymen to work for you for a pittance in abysmal environments like it is in every one of India's 'progressive' and 'industrialised' states !!!

i simple agree in me11u land u need to pay the commies if u r doing ur household work for not taking their help. they are simple crazy. also these slothful commies there will go on strike for mo reasons.. that is the reason all me11us are doing chaiwala jobs in every nook and corner of india and in gulf also.

You exaggerated that bit about the chaiwala jobs in every nook and corner of India and in the gulf. You hope that you will pass on this hearsay without being challenged.

Now, here is something with no exaggeration at all. It is verified through surveys done by different agencies and acknowledged even by the respective state governments : Kerala is almost the only major state in India that has no one engaged in manual scavenging (carrying and disposing excreta to eke out a living) !! Neighbouring 'industrially developed' Tamil nadu has 3 lakhs dependent on this job for a living and it is discussed off and on in the assembly. Gujarat is not too far behind T.N in this respect. This is a fact (though the number varies) in most of India's 'industrialised' (vow!) & 'progressive' states.

Check out various articles (written by different people) and you will understand that most of the Keralites who work in the gulf belong to the poorer sections of society. They take jobs such as supervisors, foremen, machinemen, store clerks, drivers, etc. in the gulf. To a very large extent, they are covered by relatively (relative to the condition prevalent in most Indian states) well regulated and implemented labour laws. Even then, the gulf keralites do occasionally raise the banner of revolt if there is a major breach in their labour contract. Now, what about their counterparts in the 'progressive' states of India such as T.N, A.P, Maharashtra, Gujarat, etc. ??

Re: Re: Land of Strikes and Hartals

In these states, they dispose human excreta (decades after the laws were enacted forbidding the practice), get employed on inhospitable terrain as farm hands for a pittance (bonded labour), get employed in factories that violate every statute in the factories act vis-a-vis securing the interests (healthy working conditions and just wages) of the workers, send their children to work for a paltry sum instead of sending them to school, get discriminated in society in accessing facilities such as drinking water, public health, education, employment opportunities, public distribution system, etc. !

You grinning at Keralites (and showing your yellow teeth in the bargain - metaphorically) is an exact analogy for the overused pot attempting to call a brand new kettle black !!

dude, chaiwala job in a western country is called a cafe job.cafes are biz.McDonalds is essentially a chaiwalla.
true ,keralites need to diversify a bit. they are now in hotels, shipping, publishing etc. Rediff is owned by mal.
see how many mals in govt..shivshankar menon,antony,tharoor,narayanan..ISRO Madhavan Nair. even Stock exchange boss recently was mal.
half of NRI remittances are done by mals,my friend. $25b/year!
ofcourse they have to improve..but other states ppl are not doing gr8 either.
all kerala has prob the best distribution of wealth in country..with many owning houses.

House boats
by Vinayak Naik on Jan 29, 2010 04:46 PM  | Hide replies

House boats are old. After sun down there is stink of the back water. rooms are full of giant cockroaches. prawns and other fish is EXPENSIVE. beer also cost more then 120 a bottle. add to that the trip ends early morning. ideally one should first have darshan of Guruvayoor the first day followed by the chinese nets in the evening, sun set etc. next day leave for Munnar. travel whole day and next day. thrid day leave for Thekkady. relax that day. following day take a day tour into Perriyar forest. evening visit tea factory. rest at night and leave for Allapuza for day of houseboat. next day back to cochin. stay at woods manor it is moderate and food is very very good. total cost of kerala for the above 5 days is 54,000 inc the pvt taxi , food, hotel and Perriyar entry. This way one gets to cover most of gods own county. hartal are more dangerous in interior towns.

That 'stink' comes from the country boats that dot the water. They are made of planks of wood with the gaps at their joints sealed with 'fish grease' (the slimy substance removed from the skin of fishes). This is an excellent sealant and does not rot at all.

The cockroaches are a telling legacy of unclean tourists and indifferent staff !

Where did you experience a 'dangerous' hartal ? And what was your 'experience' ?

piri, you cant blame the unclean tourist and indifferent staff.
if you want to run a business ,you have to keep place clean.
the stink is not just from fish grease..it is due to the algae formation and also the slow current etc.little can be done about these things..except cockroaches can be avoided
