House boats
by Vinayak Naik on Jan 29, 2010 04:46 PM  | Hide replies

House boats are old. After sun down there is stink of the back water. rooms are full of giant cockroaches. prawns and other fish is EXPENSIVE. beer also cost more then 120 a bottle. add to that the trip ends early morning. ideally one should first have darshan of Guruvayoor the first day followed by the chinese nets in the evening, sun set etc. next day leave for Munnar. travel whole day and next day. thrid day leave for Thekkady. relax that day. following day take a day tour into Perriyar forest. evening visit tea factory. rest at night and leave for Allapuza for day of houseboat. next day back to cochin. stay at woods manor it is moderate and food is very very good. total cost of kerala for the above 5 days is 54,000 inc the pvt taxi , food, hotel and Perriyar entry. This way one gets to cover most of gods own county. hartal are more dangerous in interior towns.

That 'stink' comes from the country boats that dot the water. They are made of planks of wood with the gaps at their joints sealed with 'fish grease' (the slimy substance removed from the skin of fishes). This is an excellent sealant and does not rot at all.

The cockroaches are a telling legacy of unclean tourists and indifferent staff !

Where did you experience a 'dangerous' hartal ? And what was your 'experience' ?

piri, you cant blame the unclean tourist and indifferent staff.
if you want to run a business ,you have to keep place clean.
the stink is not just from fish grease..it is due to the algae formation and also the slow current etc.little can be done about these things..except cockroaches can be avoided

Ample leave
by Raj on Jan 29, 2010 04:11 PM  | Hide replies

The author is absolutely wrong. You must have ample leave before you plan a trip to Kerala as Kerala is "hartal's own country". You can't predict when a hartal happens and for what reasons. The hartal’s usually end up in violence and people loose life.

Which place are you living in??? Kerala is the safest and best policed state in India. Dont beleive me....Just ask the home minister. He acknowledged that in his speech and India Today awarded the state govt for the best law and order maintained state in thw whole of India for the second consecutive time.

Mr.Raj, you are from which place in India ? Kerala is the safest, cool & most hygenic places in India. If at all there is hartal, it is not going to affect the tourists like you who are coming to enjoy the greenary that itself will rejuvenate you people as you are in the flat system and amongst concrete jungles, small dirty gullies and crowd.

Serious readers,

Kerala Ayurveda Samajam does ayurvedic massage for Rs. 350/- (i have myself undergone massage under experienced supervision and vouch for it).
Taj Malabar food is costly and is devoid of the original Kerala Food taste. Optionally you can try Gokulam Park Inn located in Kaloor (it is a 5 star hotel) and the food is affordable. For still value conscious i am reminded of Woods Manor and Abad Metro on MG Road. There are any number of smaller hotels which offer good, value for money for food. For north indian and Punjabi food - check out Mirchi's on MG Road. The author does not mention about Athirampally and Vazhachal (water falls), Cherai Beach, Kumlanghy, Backwaters near Paravur to name a few. For a proper visit to Cochin and surrounding places it is ideal to land upon a Thursday evening and do a 3 day visit starting Friday morning to Sunday evening.
