Some of these Government Institutes yet produce the best
by Vikas on Feb 19, 2010 11:58 AM  | Hide replies

After CAT the next big MBA entrance test in terms of number of applicants is CET
If you even take data of last 8 years from when there is a new phenomena of some private B-schools 1)buying ratings and rankings 2) heavily advertising in paper or radio.
The top 2 institutes in students / recruiters choice from CET entrance exams are:
JBIMS and Sydenham
both govenment institutes.
The visiting faculty in these are the best in the industry. The corporte world knows that the talent they are getting from these 2 institues is the best, hence these two institues are high on placements. The alumni of these institutes are highly respected in the industry.
The students at the Government institutes learn to be managers in a true sense with all activites and seminars handled and executed to perfection by the students themselves. also these institutes do not burn hole in students pocket by charging exhorbitant fees- the give the best ROI amongst most B-schools.
Even if Government institutes are not able to generate higher rankings in some B-school surveys because of not having world class infrastructure or having large number of permanent faculty they are able to attract the best students and recruiters because most are aware that the intellect at these institutes is high even though they are not ranked highly or are not particpative in many ranking and surveys.

everyone and his brother has an MBA in India
by Oomshik Tooshik on Feb 19, 2010 11:50 AM

cos there's 'B-schools' in every corner. See mediocre 'college' towns like Pune. Even maid has an MBA. There are like 4 Symbi 'institutes' alone. Too much supply.

Business schools or schools of Business
by sreenivasan ramasubramanian on Feb 19, 2010 11:49 AM

why talk about Business schools when may of the primary,Upper primary and high schools are not having enough teachers?Their payments are paltry. They are supposed to mould the students properly and show the future path.If their roles are devalued so much how one can expect more expensive/dearer roles to be maintained by the rulers whom we elect by way of compulsion.Any body who comes to power think that something has to be done without thinking about the effect of such actions.
I certainly feel that the changes brought about by successive ministries have devalued our educational systems to such an extend that it appears to be irreparable.

IIMs can do a lot more....
by Globalcrusador on Feb 19, 2010 11:31 AM

While we seem to have IIMs and other reputed management institutes in almost every state, I fail to understand, as to why these Institutes can not be tapped for consultancy by some of the poorly managed states in India, who have perpetually been showing losses at the end of each fiscal year. IIMs can easily be used to tone up the local administration and help plug exchequer pilfering as well. I know of several leading Professors at IIM-A who did roaring consultancy business in Mumbai with private companies.

If IIMs are pools of expert knowledge....
by Globalcrusador on Feb 19, 2010 11:18 AM  | Hide replies

One thing which has intrigued me for several decades is that IIMs teach the best of analyt- ical skills to its students thro' case study etc. and the Professors also do outside consultancy. At the same time, most state governments are most inefficiently and incom-petently run. Why can't these state Govern- ments rope in their local IIMs to help them manage much better than what they are doing at present and convert the mounting losses into profits thro' effective professional management practices ? Where there is a will, there is always a way.

There are many works IIMs do to local people but they don't showcase it to the general public. There is scope for improvement in everything.

I am talking of experienced IIM professors not students. If these Profs can get a good name from private sector, why not from State Governments, unless there is a total mismatch between mutual objectives !!
