Overall, I can't disagree on this. The reason is that he is the one who built the organization and takes the responsibility of project (most of the time); he has goals to achieve further more; and goes with people who create "less trouble"!!. Ethics, real spirit or empowering the right, or analysing the resource strength and rest everything unfortunately, secondary!

sycophancy is also a skill and art . not everybody can do this. in today's organization it is considered an asset

Agreed, look at the last one. Voicing and being able to stand up to your opinions.
If boss, gets angry, he would say incomptenent, always in disagreement, cant work in teams and of course goes without saying...has no in depth knowledge about you.
There is only one thing to be done on the job. This has a sophisticated word also - perception management. What they think about you alone matters. You can give good impressions like answering the bosses phone in time, say yes to everything, with a but what if.....and finally always have a limitation about anything you do. "No sir, I can send that report next week...if the laptop was there the....." They get the message. make the spend resurces on you. You will automatically be important!!

Not really away from reality, hower on the strategy point same strategy may not work everywhere.
