But if somebody wants to grow in Germany, France and Japan, there is no other way than learning the language. Anyway, no non-German can head a German company, however globalized they are.

Knowing a foreign Langauage
by anand subbarathnam on Aug 19, 2010 10:53 AM

If knowing a foreign language is going to boost business profits why not learn it? But never forget your mother tongue or be apolegetic about where you come from.It indicates lack of confidence in yourself. Rediff should present the above article in
a balanced fashion by presenting both views for and against learning foreign languages

That's right, competence is important, and one has to speak language of the land. Maharashtra-Marathi, Tamilnadu-Tamil, France- French, Germany-German, etc. One who does not know language of locals/masses, they will stumble and will have difficulties on JOb.

All South Indians should first learn to communicate in Hindi and English properly first.

Then think of foreign languages.

It is bad enough that they butcher Hindi and English. They don't need to add more languages to their list of victims.

"All South Indians should first learn to communicate in Hindi and English properly first."

It's not necessary to say "first" two times (or twice as you might say) in the same sentence, you know. ALL Indians should learn the vernacular first before they try to speak or write English. And that goes for North Indians, West Indians, East Indians, Red Indians! Everyone.

Language,Music should be learned at young Age
by bala murugan on Aug 18, 2010 06:24 PM  | Hide replies

Lot of Indian students (Age 23 )did not succeed in Germany because they simply can't learn language. After their education they usually go to an English speaking country to make life as easy and comfort.
I m also one among them came out of Germany.
My brain didnot like to learn German.
So it should be compulsory after class 9 and till UG one should stop learning their first language and start to learn only 2 and 3rd (German,French,Spanish)
We are sure that Hindi,Telugu,Marathi, punjabi,Tamil, etc., won't be worth to learn after class 10 for Science and Commerce students. A literature student can learn their language. but not science and commerce students-becoz there is no use after certain point.

Learning second language is important
by lankapat on Aug 18, 2010 06:19 PM  | Hide replies

It was announced on August 15th (not sure why this date was chosen) that from next year, all schools in south Sri Lanka will start teaching Chinese as a second language to students. This shows the importance of Chinese in the future economies. Lankan students will be prepared with knowledge of Sinhala, Chinese and English.

Isn't that great?

I will tell you the expereince of Singapore regarding learning languages. Singapore govt. didn't encourage the local chinese to learn the region's lingua franca "Malay". Because of this Singapore is not able to take advantage of grawing aconomies in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei etc. Likewise, if you do not know Indian languages, you will be at a disadvantage when it comes to taking advantage of Indian economy. If you learn chinese, you may at the max. be a tourist guide or a translator to the chinese tourists coming to your country

loss is for Deutsche Bank
by Anup Patel on Aug 18, 2010 06:09 PM  | Hide replies

I do think that knowing other languages helps boost your carrier but the same principle also applies to others who refuse to learn world language English.

But I don't think this is a loss to Anshu Jain rather its a bigger loss to high-headed Germans who refuse to use English in German companies. If they are unable to get there best performing employee as there global head, its certainly a problem for company and not for the person. And what goes unnoticed here that Anshu Jain is not a German and I really doubt if Germans would ever allow any non-German to head there flagship bank.

One similar example, look at US universities they are full of international students and professors, compare this to German universities, they hardly have talented international students there and there are virtually no international professors. this is directly reflected in the research output as there is hardly any German university in world top 10.

Singapore, South Africa, Canada have lots of foreign students but they are not in the top 10 either. Top 10 is very tight and not there because of foreign students.

there is huge difference between culture of research in Germany and that of Singapore, South Africa (forget about SA, its even worse than India) and Canada.

German research culture is comparable to that of US and other countries can't even come closer to them but still Germany is unable to exploit that fully.

Germany has taken some steps to improve on this but they are still far behind US in attracting top international students and researchers (e.g. there are hardly and BTech graduates from IIT going to German universities).

Also, when I say international student/researcher that doesn't mean every other Indian and Chinese student going abroad, I only mean those who can make significant contribution to Research activity.

South African research is much much higher per capita than India's. South Africa has many nobel prize winners and even the first heart surgery. South African university is ranked 148 in the world, the best Indian is in the 300s. South Africa is about to get billions of investment for the square array project based on their own investment, technology etc. SA has palindaba research going on, and much more. You assume SA is bad because it is in Africa. There are many indian students who go to SA to study. Not in the same number as to the US but much more than would go from SA to India.

Of course, more IIT students will go to US than Germany. In the US, so many IIT students go to Oklahoma, Syracuse, etc. Do you think they would cut it at a German University.

You should learn about international education before speaking. Not everything is about owning a corner cafe or running a hotel.

You seems to be in love with SA and may be you are one of those students who went there to waste there time.

See article on wiki with topic List_of_Nobel_laureates_by_country#South_Africa

Most of the South Aficans got Nobel for there work in non-science disciplines and that doesn't amount to good research in science and engineering (and as such there are hardly any engineering getting Noble price for there work, does that mean engineers contribution to the research is useless??).

I don't know which ranking you are talking about, but I don't think there is any university in SA which can compete with IISC Bangalore in terms of research in science and engineering.

Also regarding IITians, please correct yourself and stop spreading lies, there are more then enough IITians in MIT, Stanford, CalTech etc. contributing immensely to research there.

There 100s of IITians applying to US universities every year, obviously not every ends up at the top university, that doesn't mean those students are stupid, they simply don't meet entry requirement but where ever they go, IITians have leave good impression behind and don't end up working in hotel-motel or cafe as you have written (may be you are one of that working in such places and trying to denigrate top graduates from India).

For your information, I myself is an international researcher with experience in Germany, Ireland and US. I know what I am talking about so stop preaching me what I should learn.

of course you don't understand what per capita means? THere are 3 in the sciences from SA and 6 from India (incl. economics). India has 20 times the population.

Now compare how many of them got from IISc and University of Cape Town.

When I studied at MIT, there were some good IIT students, but many were just bad. Yes, I have been to South Africa. University of Cape Town produces much more recognised research in mathematics and zoology and science in general than IISc. Go look it up. The only field that IISc is better at in science is statistics. I have done research on why IISc is failing in its standards to match even University of Cape Town. Do you know who is Christian Barnard, or George Ellis, or ....I could go on. Of course, you don't. Go wikipedia it.

If you want to look at rankings, looking for times higher education. If you didn't even know that, then i should not be talking.

I didn't say IITians end up at hotels, mostly Patels at hotels (that rhymes too).
