Inspirational Story

Firstly Heartiest Congratulation to Dr. Kartik for topping at the IAS. It is indeed heartening to read his views which are very inspirational and refreshing. To forgo prestigious scholarships from reputed institutes, and dedicate himself for the cause of the downtrodden in highly commendable.
I hope his example would inspire other aspiring youngsters to put country before self.

Truths

First i have to congratulate Dr Karthik for his achievement.
But the reality is, India has seen such so called "Whiz kids" for over 40 years(from 1970's to till date). Honestly, none of them could create wealth and prosperity or innovative governance in india.
The problem lies in believing that these young kids would do some wonder. From our experience its NO. India needs experts as decision makers and planners. Not students fresh out of top institutes becoming "special people" in the society. Almost all developed countries relies on PhD's for solving the problems and increasing the quality of life of their people.
India never beliefs on experts. They believe on toppers. Please understand that toppers need not be experts but experts are always experts.Whether they are toppers or not.
We need entire Indian administrative contingent to be flooded with PhD's with 10-15 years of experience in law, economics, commerce, sociology, business and some with science.
Lastly, indian kids can crack any formidable entrance test in the world, very easily. But the reality is neither such a feat is required nor is of any use to make better scientists and administrators for a country. But certainly its' glamorous!.
My Hearty Congratulations to Dr Karthik again.

u r right but even with a PhD u cannot solve problems. In India the problem is the socio-economic-gov-administrative structure is poor, unless it is set right u cannot solve any problem. The US sub prime crisis is a good ex, in spite of several experts working in different fields the economy crashed and no one can still pin point the proper reasons for it

But understand that USA has gone to this level because of experts. Problems exist everywhere in world, but we need to see what level those countries are at and where we are. One can not equate India and USA just because both countries have accidents, theft etc.and other social problems.

phds might be good in solving complex probs(scientific, technical etc) but for general probs, anybody can come up with a good solution. this is case in western countries.many of innovative products, techniques etc have been developed by ordinary people.

Firstly, It is heartening to see an IAS topper having a heart for the country. People likeDr Karthik are the ONLY Heroes.
Now coming to the 'expert' debate, friends, our country has NO dearth of them. We already have many, many experts in all walks.
It is the system, which is a consequence of ALL of us. WE have to come good. WE must possess the heart to do something, to bring about some change. Dr Karthik has shown this heart.
One can be an IAS, a businessman, a student, a journalist, a banker.
How many times do we care for the RED signal when there is no Policeman? Just an example.
All the experts and their expertise have tried, but for the system that keeps the poor man bridged from the policymakers.
Even the Official Poverty Line in India (2400 calories in rural areas and 2100 calories in urban areas, per day, per adult person) is dated. Policies on poor are being made in airconditioned halls of New Delhi, without even visiting a Ranikhet, or a Khandwa or a Siwan or a Badwani or any such place.
Even these policies shall do good, but for the proper implementation, or lack of it.
An IAS officer has got tremendous authority and if he choses to let the policies be implemented in letter and spirit, believe me, most of the problems are solved that concern extreme poverty and unemployment.
Dr Karthik chose a path where he can stay close to people and work on their problems.
Let us hope he does succeed in fighting against the odds.
All the Best

good but..what is the govt doing to protect honest youngsters?
by kumar kn on Apr 15, 2010 12:21 PM

I hope he does not get the fate of manjunath or satyendranath dubey. I hope the govt provides him security to walk the path of honesty. btw i also heard that in AP, people with IAS get highest dowry -- running into crores-- i am not sure which is higher in the Andhra pradesh dowry market--IAS or PHD and a job in US?
I hope our friend here was not motivated by the dowry market though?

The basic
by Jayesh on Apr 15, 2010 12:17 PM  | Hide replies

question is when so many talented IAS officers have joined the IAS since 1947 (many in a single attempt) then y is India still a backward country? whereas most of the IAS officers cause there own development and rise up the social ladder? Saying that I work for the dev of the country and then manage themselves into plum postings where they can travel to and fro to Power centers like Delhi or International conferences and seminars are mere platitudes.
The fact is the IAS lobby has been at the forefront of corruption. In that sense they r the ones who have caused backwardness of the country simply because the black economy in India is nearly 3 times the white economy, if only this money is channelised into the proper channel much more development can happen due to the general public's efforts and not because of any IAS officer

Clear case of misplaced priorities. We have been getting bright people in administration for 50 years but nothing changed much......They get corrupted after joining serice. Educated and strictly upright people are needed in politics first......no second thoughts..........It is easy to qualify exams but difficult to change the framework/way of thinking......

Dear karthik, first thank NTR for his initiative in changing educative system of andhra pradesh. Once backward in education than other states.

Encourage hardworking service oriented people around you. There are many scientists, doctors, engineers, farmers, students and even teachers beyond the imaginaiton of a normal man. ENCOURAGE THEM ALL TO THE CORE.

Good luck.

Great start, keep it up there !
by UsualSuspect on Apr 14, 2010 07:44 PM

Karthik Adapa, you have got the best start to your aspirations that you could ask for ! You got into IAS, and are serving in an area where you could make the most impact.

You can expect the challenges in the rest of your career to be daunting, trying, discouraging, etc. given the prevailing situation of our society and politics (read corruption, cronyism, nepotism, etc). Your real success will be in sticking to your ideals and principles come what may, never giving in to external pressures, and inspiring a few along the way.

As an IAS officer, you will have a whole district, at times even a whole state, as your canvas. Go paint it as best as you can !

The cynics, pessimists, losers here who are posting nasty comments can go back to the holes where they came from !
