Sensibility is the key
by Niranjan Josyula on Sep 17, 2009 07:26 PM

I think everyone needs to be sensible to the other persons needs, securities and insecurities. It is the same whether it is between two friends or wife & husband or daughter & Mother-in-law or father & son or any other. otherwise no relationship can stand for long.

Coming to serials and movies, yes it needs to change in terms of portaying certain characters - especially mom-in-law and cop. both these are misused for making the kahani more interesting.

Also, daughters-in-law who look at these serials and get a picture of moms-in-law should understand in their subliminal mind that a few years down the line the roles will be reversed and someone will be picturing them as mom-in-law in the mind and if mom-in-law is portrayed as archetypical bad person they too will fall in that category further down in their lives.

Sensibility and sensitivity is the key

Main trouble
by Rythm on Sep 17, 2009 07:11 PM  | Hide replies

It is all futile because the main trouble is many people staying together. Each person has to justify, please, shout, convince every other person. In fact in India, most of a person's problems are because he/she stays with many people and burdened with expectations, rules, regulations. All mindless things.

We have only one life. And our purpose is to fulfill our dreams (workwise) and also enjoy it to the fullest. We spoil our own lives by staying with many people in the same house. This option/culture itself is harmful. Most in India are sad/depressed mainly because of this joint family habit. It is only control freak people, who like to control others' lives who like to live together.

very subjective...people have to work or live together only.. ridiculous to say that ' we are spoiling our lives by staying with so many people in same house etc'.. how does one grow up otherwise..the ' so many' are needed as thats what constitues the family.. today more people talk about the huge plus the joint family system had when there was always that helping hand or that willing shoulder to lean upon not to mention that pesky interferences... yes but is not all this part of the deal...." most in india is sad/ depressed" is a wrong statement - India ranks second in terms of the happiness index despite the poverty.. that only shows the mindset of the average Indian is not cynical but positive- which is the first step to salvation and growth.

"India ranks second in terms of the happiness index despite the poverty.." Thats incorrect. India's rank is 125th. Its the european countries and even country like columbia which occupy the top slot. We fare poorly compared to even our neighbours, actually! You dodnt need a survey to know this. Its actually very obvious if we are ready to face the truth.

Very true. Complete reflection of my thoughts, in fact! We Indians carry too much of baggage. But, the worst part is we claim that we are all living "happy" unlike the westerners while the truth is exactly the opposite! The key problem with our set up is that we keep everyone perennially dependent and always look for martyrs in family! Nobody ever feels confident about handling their life on their own without the support of others! This breeds insecurity and hence the fight to "take control".

Rhythm is outright stupid, AK is kind of OK (no pun intended).

Live and let live. Let others be what they are. Do advice/suggest but don't force. And limit desires. Then things will be a lot better.

Dear Rythm,
When you in your deathbed or laid down in a disability and your wife just divorces you, you will then know the value of relationships. The people living alone in Europe/ US are more depressed than the ones living with families in India. Problems are due to selfish guys like you who think that living without giving is joyful

Yes. Thank you. I will be happy and contented old man and alone. Because I would have followed my dreams and lived like I wanted to. Unlike many who carry baggages and sacrifice and think they are great. They will live with burdens the whole life only so that they can die in front of 9 people crying. No thanks.
