SINCERITY alone doesnt works everytime.
by RAKSHANDA on Jul 25, 2009 06:13 PM

todays world is of showing away, i dnt wanna say that u must flatter or overshow urself, but still apart from sincerity today people expect sincerty something that captures attention instantly. work itself speaks, i agree but these days some smartness is also required else everybody takes u forgranted. but still onle oversmartness n no sincerity , oops;..that willbe like feeding with an empty spoon;

Golden Rules
by Jas on Jul 23, 2009 10:25 AM

1. Know your job well, without being arrogant about it. Be polite.
2. Provide status updates only when asked for or expected.
3. Show your boss in good light, by not trying to hog the limelight - even when you may have deserved it.
4. Do not provide feedback on your colleagues or other employees - especially negative feedback - even if the feedback is true and correct. If cornered into providing feedback, provide some mumbo-jumbo feedback.
5. In small companies Performance Matters more. In Big companies, Boss Management and Office Behavior matters more.
6. Bosses are like Police - too much of friendship is not good with them.

Never forget - Bosses are also humans.

handle the Boss
by sanjay singh on Jul 22, 2009 11:33 AM  | Hide replies

handling the Boss is not a easy steps which can be followed, its depends up on individual.
By Experiance of 17 years as follows-
1.always work for Boss not for organisation.
2.always show lesser expertise in any field in comparision of your boss.
3.your boss are free to handle or taking the direct report from your subordinates bypassing u but never try to by pass your boss and report to their senior.
4.Communicate only information not solution.
5.show that u are in promlem in absence of him.
6.fulfil the assignment given by the boss with in suffiecient time not show hurry.
7.become yes Man.
8.watch your appraisal report.
9. find out the weak points and work only accordingly.
10.it goes well then no problem.
11. otherwise change your acts, strenthen himself , discuss with boss for their practical desireness, try to act and achieve them if practicals if impractical then comunicate him immediately.
12 again watch your appraisal.its shows imporoving as per expectation then ok.
13. otherwise come and go , do your routine job and assigned job with in time.
14. enjoy your self what u gets.

Good and useful message from someone with real-life experience. It will help in retaining our job and prevent us fro getting sacked.

But there will be a price to pay in the damage to your personality. But may be small for those who have their families at heart

Mr. Sanjay,
The points which you wrote to please your boss is correct but what will you do if your boss is a unique peace & attained the height due to his qualification ( from donation type college ) & great flaterring.
What will you do if your boss always gives instructions in words but if something goes wrong , he put blame directly on you & speak false. If your boss likes to listen false complaints from others & without analizing issue you a memo. If your boss takes a lot of work from you but never recoznise your work & give promotion to you. If your boss is short tempered & speak loudly. If your boss has no fundamental knowledge but if you advice good points, he jealous from you & try to find a moment to demoralise you. If your boss intention is to follow his instructions whether it is in the interest of company or not but to see negative result punish you.
Dear, there are so many ill qualities which a boss possess but you bear your boss for the sake of your family & livlihood. The Mantra `BOSS IS ALWAYS WRITE` was given to INDIANS by English people who ruled over indians for many years . They wanted that we are their slaves & we should always say them ~YES~ in any conditions. We live in FREE INDIA but our maximum policies, principle
& thoughts are same which they have taught us. BOSS MAY BE WRONG, OUR LEADERS MAY BE WRONG
OR ANYONE POTENTIAL MAN MAY BE WRONG.THIS IS UPTO YOU THAT HOW MUCH YOU WANT TO BEAR HIM & HAVE NOT COURAGE TO RAISE VOICE AGAINST ATTORCITIES.

Reality

3) 3)"It's important to understand his preferred style of communication"

This is very dicey. If u call him, he would expect an email as he does not wnt to be dstrbd, and if u send him an email, he would insist tht u had called him in the first place as he has no time for emails. OVerall if he decides to find faults nothing can prevent him.

4) Be prepared with your own ideas for a solution, and suggest them if you are not satisfied with the solutions offered.

Don't do this unless u r sure ur boss is friendly and confident. Otherwise he may conclude that u r t
trying to teach him new ideas and hence u r proud and hence he concludes it is high time he shows u ur place.Don't go with new ideas especially gud ones unless u r sure of how he will take it.

4) Become visible

Don't again do this unless he shows u off to people in the company. Else u r sure to be pushed to a corner. Many bosses cannot tolerate a subordinate who is popular with others, more so if u hv better people skills than him.
Bosses generally suffer form lot of insecurity and u need to constantly assure him tht u do not want to cut him and neither u r better than him in any way else Trouble for you.

The above r general observations which any one can see in an office atmosphere.

It is gud to write and read these things in this article but the truth is sadly much away from it.....ask experienced people.

really there is no defined management fanda for the same, because in india bosses have pre occupied conerns about their subordinates, its not easy to change their opinion by your work only.

The reality!
by Aarti on Jul 22, 2009 11:09 AM  | Hide replies

I read teh article. But this is wht happens in reality.

"Don't wait for the boss to call on you. You do not need to be specific about the issues when you do this. Simply state that you have some concerns to discuss, and want to be sure that you will both have time to address them without interruption"

If you keep going to the boss about work he simply desists you. Many bosses don't want to talk about work. So when u give him status even when nto asked of go to him for weekly summaries without him calling you he gets irritated. If u happen to be a female, he thinks u come to his desk to attract "attention" and starts giving the same to you to your surprise!

2) "Communicate with your peers and especially those above you in different expertise areas. Find solutions for senior managers outside of your immediate department. Meet with them monthly for lunch"

If you go and talk to people outside of your departmetn the first thing your boss feels is INSECURITY. H imagiens that u will discussing him in bad light with them. Also there is so much rivalry in corporate atmosphere that if u speak to anothe top guy your boss is sure to be angry with you and thsi gets reflected in teh sudden harsh and indifferetn way he treats you.BE rest assured that thsi si the BEST way to antagonise your boss. He eve nimagines tht u r trying to get mgmt. influence to cut him and promote yourself. H leaves not stoens unturned to make life ifficult for u.

Aarti,

You sure have some bad experiences. While lot of these 'advises' are baseless motherhood statements, they give you a direction on how work place needs to be managed.

You may have to decide which of these advices suit a particular environment. No magic pill for sure.
