that the list is pretty compelling. Just wonder whether Russian writers have been so prolific and incisive in their thinking and philosophy, due to the political atmosphere and problems they faced at home or inspite of these.
Definitely rate R.K.Narayanan and Mulk Raj Anand (whose portayals of rural India are pretty bizarre), highly.
Rabindranath Tagore should make this list of mine for the sheer brilliance and all encompassing nature of his work, even though I have read these only in translations. The same goes for Munshi Premchand.
Khalil Gibran would be another sure winner for me.
Good write up, got me thinking about the books i had read, am reading and would want to read in the future.
agree with the list although narayanan should be there but i guess mistry is more now a days kinda guy(too much sadness though). Salman should not be on any list, purely because his books are not understood by common people, he is mostly hype. Arundati has not produced a rerun, the book was nice but not a classic, hype again.
only 1 indian in list ? this show how deep western bootlicking mindset has come in. what about salman rushdie , rabindranath tagore , arundhati roy , khushwant sighn ,etc
mario puzo - the godfather mark twain - adventures of tom sawyer, huckleburyfin, prince & pauper R.L.Stevenson - Treasure Island r.k.narayan,ruskin bond, charles dickens, carl sagan,Rabindranath Tagore

you're right about Mark Twain, completely missed him :) Reading about Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer get me laughing upto this day. Also his short stories are real gems.
