Reject job offers gracefully
by Balaji on Aug 23, 2006 08:23 PM

I think, the system must be foolproof by itself rather than blacklisting the candidate. If the candidate doesn't reply back to the employer within a certain date, then the offer stands void.
Since, there can be various reasons for the candidate to decline and sometimes she finds herself in a catch22 situation whether to reply or not like, then this blacklisting will do no good to the candidate.

Nasscom does have better thinsg to do ..
by Sriram on Aug 23, 2006 08:13 PM

Sir/madam,

Why does this need to be Told to HR, if he is Not turning up on Joining date it is assumed that candidate has chosen a better job. Black listing and red taping call it any name is absolute stupidity. Only we Indians come up with fancy things in name of regulation to benefits very few people. As candidate compete for the Jobs, industry should compete for Candidate. in 2001 and 2002 Do you know how many offers were declared void by reputed firm. why didn\\\\\\\'t people raise the issue. I accept it is Professional and courtesy to inform whether you accept or reject an offer but it should not be punishable. We dont punish people for not saying \\\\\\\"Thank You\\\\\\\" or \\\\\\\"Excuse Me\\\\\\\".

In past do you heard of any story of rejecting a candidate in polite manner, some time HR won;t even reply back to candidate whether he is seleted or reject and on what grounds.

FYI .. I am an HR from reputed IT firm who si ready to live by the fact that thet companies fight for Associates rather than associates fighting for Jobs.

Instead of spoiling the career maintain the List of Employees who excelled to help him to get better job in the market.

-Sriram

What do you do when they ask you why you have turned down the offer?
by tone on Aug 23, 2006 05:20 PM  | Hide replies

My question is do you take time to explain the basis of why you turned down the offer? If the company asks you for reasons do you explain it in detail or just avoid answering all together.

You can clearly mention them that your decision is firm and final and make them clear that you see the new offer being much more aligned to your future plans. The only thing you should take care is not to hurt the other company's "ego" by saying that they were paying less or not fit etc.

In case other jobs are already in hand, it may be worthwhile to be a little more open and share the same with potential interviewer.

It helps both ways - you may land a better offer; the prospective employer knows in advance that you may or may not accept. Downside being the prospective employer may be reactive and may not extend any offer.

I strongly agree with the author that professionalism helps in the long run even if you decline the offer.

This is one-sided..if you are going to blacklist a person who did not turn up on the date of joining it should be the same for the companies who do not reply that a particular person is not being selected as the person is waiting to get a respone from the company for a long time?

Unprofessional Companies

I donot blame the candidates.I think companies IT or otherwise need to behave more humanely. The loss suffered by a candidate who does not know that he has been rejected & waits endlessly is much more than what a company suffers when a candidate does not turn up.Most of the companies are very heartless and even in this age of instant communication they do not bother to inform candidates who have been rejected in the final rounds & why. When a candidate is rejected but not informed or is informed months later that the offer has been withdrawn, not only the career of the candidate suffers but the whole family of the candidate who has gone thro various hardships & invested in his/her education suffers.I think HR is most heartless anywhere and they shd first be taught to be more humane first if at all. Right now its the sellers market and the techies are the sellers so there is nothing wrong.Yet the companies do not learn.

Reject Job offers
by Vikrant on Aug 23, 2006 04:20 PM

Hi,

I feel that the Nasscom implements the same at the earliest so that the candidates who have multiple job offers will behave a little professionally especially the IT techies guys which will be beneficial for both the companies as well as the candidates too.

Rgds,

The nasscom strategy is similar to the employment in gulf where you cannot change jobs without NOC from the present employer. It is modern form of slavery and the employer can armtwist you and you are totally at the employers mercy. Will these employers guarantee employment in bad times or will they fire the employee?
