Though I always dont agree with widespread generalization that is present in your articles ( i guess it is for the sake of simplicity ), but one small sentence in your article can put together the gist of your whole article- this is not verbatim "An extraordinarily intelligent individual will always do well wherever he/she is, US or India. It is the layer just below the cream that NEEDS dollars to make it big(financially)".

And one more point, though Friedman says that the world is FLAT, unfortunately it is not so yet. A person in Boston gets into Ivy league much more easily than a person from a third world.

The wall ( between Blore and Boston ) might have disappeared, but still it is not a level playing field.

Obviously the views are very very personal. If anyone who has lived abroad (sticking to 1st world) has a diff opinion. As for $ salaries ever tried finding out how many are the lucky ones ??. There is actually a big wall created b.w the guys who get a $ salary and those who donot. (Ask someone who went through the placement process at IIMA).
I am born Indian. And a lot of things are extremely true. However, there are zillions of things the west has to offer. Also the point about poor students and 3rd grade universities. A lot of indians choose for top ranking universities. (IITs are not even ranked in top 50 in the world). IIM A is the only institute to be ranked in the top 65 schools.
When u study at an Indian Institute the perpective is most of the time local.I mean an avg class as something like 50 students. An avg course at Oxford/Harvard attarcts more no of nationalities. Indian universities are excellent. No doubt. But my point is that all students donot go abroad to 3rd grade universities.Further, coming to zillions of things west has to offer. Even today and even in Delhi. We have power cuts 4 hours, water supply problem, traffic congestion, post doesnot allow me 2rite more:(

I live in a developed city too, and here we have a lot of Indians living the Indian lifestyle. There is a little India( just as in each country where there is a significant Indian populace there is a little India)....and this area looks just like India, only cleaner.

I understand that the Indians ideally ought to stay in India and try to make it an almost-ideal living situation like Singapore...but reality is different.

Because I earn in Singapore dollars it is much easier for me to pay or the family back at home, and when I donate for a cause the exchange rate allows me to donate more.

Things are easier here, life is more stress-free, you dont have to haggle for everything, be jostled around in crowded places...and to my mind, almost every Indian should live abroad once just to experience the difference, to know how it can be and how we should make it happen in India.

Each of us can do one small thing to help things along, whether it is throwing our trash the proper way, or not spitting or leaving cigarette butts in public areas......and staying in a developed country gets you into that habit very fast.

I do intend to return to India one day, but in the meanwhile I dont think it is stupid to live abroad if one gets the opportunity.

extremely well written article. the truth applies to any country you live in ..one earns according to the cost of living in the country you stay. affordibility of goods varies with country.in first world countries one cannot afford maid servants or cheap labour to do your work. One learns to do everything on his/her own.for indians it is something difficult to come in terms with.
