tv watching in kids.
by Ashwini on Dec 06, 2004 06:49 PM

I agree that tv viewing should be limited but this woman is replacing one obsession ( tv ) with another( books)

There should be a fine balnce of tv, books outside play

activities with other children sharing and imaginary play. This seems like overdose of reading to me. There is a wealth of knowledge on TV and some sheer good fun to be had. why miss it all. Well to each her own ( children? )

Children who do not watch TV
by krishna rao on Dec 06, 2004 05:48 PM

We have been without a cable connection for over 5 years now, and we only watch news on doordarshan. We have two children (both boys 10 & 8 years) and life with them has been so. To them books, comics, are the indoor past times and they spend more time on their bicycle and in the park.

Sometime back my son cut a sorry figure in the class and the teacher was very surprised and called us to confirm if our son was not used to watching TV.

We as a family spend more time talking, walking, and buying lots of books. Of course this proves to be costlier than having a cable connection at home but what I have seen is this give us a lot of peace of mind and live in a world of reality.

Regards

Krishna

My ideas, my outlook, my ways....you live with that
by howle on Dec 06, 2004 05:26 PM

I understand that it is a great habbit to read books, and it improves imagination but you cannot point a finger at another medium and say that the other is bad. Probably this was your interest and m not sure whether this is what your kids want. Looks like the opinion has been buried deep under over time.

Are you absolutely sure that they dont sneak off to watch what they want else where.

Please dont enforce the way you grew up on to kids of a different generation.

The key requirement for evolution is to maintain a written record of achievement. --ray kurzweil. First it was DNA, then written scripts, now possibly TV

Last but not the least... they say that a picture is worth a thousand words... and a moving picture.......any guesses??

imposing your belief on the child
by Jagan on Dec 06, 2004 03:53 PM

well, i am not sure if it is your writing style that gives me this impression, but looks like you have a fixed belief on what develops a child's mind and thought process and are imposing it upon the child. There are so many good things you can learn from the TV too and the computer or the internet is not not a monster that you need to fear. I am sorry to say this but this article just comes to me as another example of a parent trying to impose his / her own idealogies on a child and taking pride of that fact too.

Great!
by Jordan on Dec 06, 2004 03:49 PM

Hi,
This is very good article and hope the readers get to know the essence of it. Most of the parents don't take care of the future of their children in this techonoligcal era. We are getting lot of information from the electornic media on the other side this is also contributes to the other things which will be going down in the further generations like games where in the past all used to for the evening time pass or helps the kids physically. Education is of course a priority but not be given the top. Such things also lead to the mental instability of the Kids. Thanks once agian for the author.

Is Reading Books alone enough for a kid???
by Sasi Kumar on Dec 06, 2004 02:53 PM

Reading books is really a very good practise for the kids. There is no doubt in it. But more they get friendlier with books they will find difficult to go ahead with the peoples.

Todays world mostly requires good managers,Innovative thinkers and all of tte part good team players who can understand others.

How much of it do you think will be given by the books? Absolutely its very limited. They learn but they dont understand. They learn about the heros, but how much effort will they take to become a hero in a life. Its little harder to imagine.Theory can not make a man perfect. All these books will teach him something but can he feel those feelings?

Just for example: Book teaches him that victory is not the all you need and we should always learn from our mistakes. But How? It remains a big question??

Leave your child to play with your neighbours, unkown person. Then he could realize the truth that his books has given him.He will know to value others thoughts. He would be a great leader in near future.Belive me or not books are important but they dont serve a lot.Teach him how to play he will learn all by himself without your effort. The work is simple for you just set his attitude.

Is ur child...
by shridhar on Dec 06, 2004 01:55 PM

I think its an excellent piece which will help lots of parents to understand the changing behavior of their children. I hope parents will at last stop using the television as Babyseater!

The literature in mothertongue is another important matter. Unfortunately the author hasnt touchd it at all. As the modern parents are changing the spoken language at home to English i dont know how the children will relish the literature from their mothertongue.
