BJP politics
by kismat on May 28, 2009 09:53 AM  | Hide replies

The BJP is seen as a very regressive and petty minded party by the urban upper and middle classes. Moreover, the BJP is not at all in favour in NON HINDI speaking areas.
The BJP should (and it will) concentrate on divisive hindu muslim, mandir masjid and other controversial policies.
The lumpen elements in Indian society are sure to join the BJP bandwagon on this platform.
Trying to put a progressive and pro development face for the BJP has cost the party dear.
Hope Advani and Co do a rethink and come up with something spectacular like Gujarat all over India and try to wrestle the LS in the next elections.
Good luck.

BJP was hesitent-means lacked confidence in their ideology
by Ramesh Anand on May 28, 2009 09:08 AM  | Hide replies

As said by me earlier it appeared as if BJP was compaigning not to defeat Congress but to inflict maximum hurts/wounds on itself-nay on Hindu cause.Congress has always acted bold.Every one knows that Muslim League is worse than Lashkare Toiba etc,but Congress openly enrolled them in UPA and out of two MPs one of them was given an extremely important portfolio-Foreign affairs to Ahmed.Ahmed is the same one who got all the 36 Muslim MPs together and passed a resolution that these 36 MPs elected in 2994 will sit every month to review the progress made by each one of these 36 Muslim MPs in respect of Islam and Muslims. Now Congress did not have any compulsion to take again two MPs of Muslim League because Congress got very comfortable numbers to form the govt without MPs from this dangerous or anti India party. But they have not only taken them but given a cabinet portfolio too giving a direct message to our Muslims.IS IT NOT STRANGE THAT CONGRESS,COMMUNISTS,RJD,SP,BSP ETC ETC TREAT BJP,A PARTY WORRYING FOR THE NATION AS A DANGERIOUS AND DIVISIVE PARTY BUT CONSIDERS MUSLIM LEAGUE A PATRIOTIC PARTY.INCLUDING MUSLIM LEAGUE IN THIS GOVT TOO IS ENOUGH TO WIN OVER THE MINORITY.
Now it is for public of India to decide(they have already decided if it was not electronic fraud) what do they want from future.Do they really want BJp to discard 370,common civil code,Ram Mandir.Do they really want majority to behave like minority and minority to behave like majority?

ISSUES BUT NO ISSUES
by bharat kapoor on May 28, 2009 07:55 AM

BJP didn’t criticise pointedly policies like equating madarsa certificates with those of CBSE or reservation for SC/ST in private
sector which directly affected the younger lot, beyond accusing Congress in a round about manner of playing vote bank politics,
reducing the campaign to attacks of personal nature.

Sugar sold at Rs30 a kg but that was not made an issue. Similarly `wheat import scandal’, spectrum sale and disruption in road construction by NHAI remained muted at best and there was little comparing and contrasting post Godhra with 1984 carnage in National Capital where not one rioter was
even injured. None narrated the compulsions of Kandhar as if party had no archives.
Then there was this exhaustive manifesto, painstakingly prepared but hardly propagated or compared with those of other parties. It was as if elections were being fought on personalities instead of issues.
Perhaps the party hesitated thinking it may have to choose the same people as coalition partners.
Party also failed to come up front to analyse what Varun said and why? So the rumour mills had a field day. Was it because the party was stunned by this unexpected development or it felt the episode would consolidate hindu votes in its favour, is difficult to fathom? But the guess that both happened to be true may not be far wrong. Some were stunned to silence while others were gleeful.
All in all BJP appeared to be willing to hurt but afraid to strike.

FACTORS WORKING AGAINST BJP
by bharat kapoor on May 28, 2009 07:35 AM  | Hide replies

Not being a monotheistic creature like congress where high command holds the whip BJP needs mature leaders. But with so many of the second rung leaders being of indeterminate seniority and from diverse backgrounds the party finds it difficult to discipline them unlike congress in the high command mode. Remember what happened to Margrate Alva! So the `crab syndrome’ causes infighting.
Secondly BJP leaders and particularly those of its sister organisations are given badly to one-upmanship and think nothing of wounding their own national leader so long as they can garner headlines. Imagine Muthalik of Sriram sena ringing up Press photographers to cover his beating the girls. Remember how Vajpayee was attacked when he said NDA lost because of Post Godhra riots. But we won in Gujarat was the corus. Whereas the fact remains that BJP's partners lost in Andhra & Tamilnadu as minority community deserted them and NDA came a cropper. The balloon theory works. Press & it protrudes somewhere else, press it more and it bursts at the weakest point. There is also no hesitation in washing dirty linen in public. RSS recently raised the ruckus about Jinnah even though it is on record that Jinnah declared full freedom for every Pakistani to pursue his faith. In fact Jinnah is wrongly blamed for partition too as he had settled for deputy premiership but Nehru didn’t want to share power, even though Mahatma favoured the arrangement.

BJP's Need to Re-engineer
by Giri Girishankar on May 28, 2009 04:20 AM

Continuing with my previous message, I believe that BJP's re-engineering process should use Mr. Advani in the very important role of Rajguru. He, himself, should make the necessary change in his thinking and, in a spirit of renunciation, give up his political pursuits. He should dedicate himself to being the leader of a resurgent BJP - a movement to build a Bharat based on strong values and beliefs. Sathya, Dharma, Shanthi, and Prema should be pillars of the Indian society. His knowledge of the country and its people, his years of experience in the political arena, and his knowledge of the ways and means of the Congress Party and other parties qualify him for the suggested role. His appeal to the people should be positive and constructive; should integrate the nation; should not be to denigrate the other parties. That would be his legacy to the BJP and the nation.

BJP's Need to Re-engineer
by Giri Girishankar on May 28, 2009 03:43 AM  | Hide replies

Congratulations to Chandan Mitra on an objective analysis of BJP's performance in the elections. In particular, I agree with Chandan on the importance of the younger generation to the party's future in Indian politics. The party has to devise a suitable strategy to win back the youth of the country. Here, it has to learn to see them as struggling to improve their quality of life in the context of a growing national economy and widening globaliztion. They are accordingly attracted to an emphasis on jobs, education, housing, mobility and such other aspects of life. Religion, important as it is, cannot take center stage in their lives under the present circumstances.

The BJP has to feel in its heart its own importance in the politics of the nation. It has to truly believe in itself as the alternativ to Congress to lead the nation and not just as the savior of Hinduthva. Having mishandled this election, it must now re-engineer itself to be seen and understood as a progressive and open-minded organization, which is prepared to build a consensus from diverse views from its present and potential members. It is understood that Hinduthva is a core value of the party. Let its basic and fundamental values, not the rituals and externalities, be exhibited in the policies and practices of the party. Let us realize that the country's youth want to move ahead and not be stuck in history. Means must be as important ends. This where it has to distinguish itself from the Congress Party.

you are correct; Religion should be kept to the individual only; but should not made as a public issue. Man created religion to decipline himself but he became slave to it; its shame. Any political party should look into the basic needs of the people and then only it could rule the country. Only talking about temple/masjid/church will NOT help in any election and certainly CANT rule the country with religious ideology.

I pity your neighbour who did not pull out in time and we have to suffer a 'haramee' like you who does not have a penny respect for a honest politician who served this country throughtout his life. You have a right not to be his supporter him but you have no right to disrecpect the old man already in his last phase.
