Normal analysis of India's elections have to be approached with caution so what any one says about causes might be revised in the light of further reflection. It was even apparent before Varun Gandhi made his speach that the BJP was hardly on a winning trajectory. The toll of infighting in the BJP had taken the gloss off the party and showed that it was no different. Varun's speach confirms that discline went of the window and certainly helped consolidate Muslim votes. All that said, the Congress Party made good use of the Gandhi name. If Rahul is going to be any use to the BJP, he needs to move up front very quickly and put all the troubles behind him. Perhaps its very much a Hindu thing, but except for the Gods, anyone who shines in the leadership stakes have somehow to be pulled down to size. No one how great, in the BJP has found that to his cost. Credibility is very quickly lost unless the BJP learns to restrain this tendency and give its leaders the capacity to grow and develop. The resistance to Advani's offer to resign gives the impression that the party has not been able to develop a replacement which is very close to the truth. It would be better for the party to give individuals the room to showcase their capacity to lead rather than nominate someone for almost all the wring reasons.
