I find it interesting when people talk of vote banks. What is a vote bank anyway? A bunch of people who agree with what you are doing and will vote for you. Like Brahmins are BJPs vote bank or Gujratis Modi's votebank. Isn't that how democracy works. The party that has the most vote banks wins. That by definition requires a party to have a policy/program that appeals to most of the vote banks. Which , given large numbers automatically rules out any kind of extreme positions. Please remind me again what is so bad about having vote banks.s.

If one community can vote based on religious issues..i.e everybody discusses how they will vote based on terrorism etc, why cant the majority vote on religion?Why 2 rules for 2 religions? we all know that one community goes to their place of worship..aka mosque and take directives from their religious leader...so thats secular? Did you know that on the day of the Mumbai train blasts, the Government gave Rs 150 crores for earthquake relief in Pakistan ? Last year our Govt. has given Rs 3000 crores (600 Million Dollars) to Afghanistan? This, when victims of terror in India have not yet got aid? What's going on?
Is this Government really secular?
When Madrasas are being shut down in Pakistan, the Indian Government is giving them CBSE status !! It is depriving Muslim children in getting secular education. A Madrasa educated person can get a job in any government office without going through the secular education system. Can India afford to have fundamentalists in government departments? Why cannot the government shut down Madrassas and let Muslim children study with the rest?

Our leaders are not focused , Ayodhya, Hindu State, Spreading Hatred, Leaving from the core funda of Unity in Diversity, going back to Brahminya is the real cause and National AGenda is not communicated or marketed
Strikes, Bands, Hartals should be banned, whoever does anything against they should be punished (fines), Statistics should be provided to general public about no. of bands, public property loss, who is responsible etc should be provided by the govt authorities in main medias
All the medias should focus on development from the blame game and to positive energy

when did they not give equal opportunity? equal opportunity means to study in normal schools and collegees thats secular education and not studying in some madrassa...
kaangi is also communal coz they say all minorities have first right on the countries resources...
As we all know, in a democracy the ultimate arbiter and validation of a party, ideology or an individual is the electorate. People on either side of the isle are left wondering (sometime bitterly) as to what the people want. So rather than denigrating the verdict I think it is better for those that may be handed a defeat tomorrow to ponder on how out of touch they are with the great Indian masses. Indonesia the largest Muslim country on the planet had its election last month and all the orthodox Muslim parties had to bite dust. That, in a land that is 97% Muslim. People in general are moderate and centrist. They do not like extremes of any kind. So parties that take everybody with them and are build on compromise and moderation are likely to win. Elites may not like what the masses choose, but that is something they have to learn to live with. Whoever wins tomorrow, the ultimate winner is going to be India, which for all its contradictions and chaos, goes through this excercise in democracy every five years (sometimes more than once). I think we would do well to accept the verdict of the Indian voters, rather than trying to poke holes into how and why they voted the way they did. This is after all how we chose to govern ourselves.

Irgun, as you well know military rule will never work in India. And the Indian military knows that. So while Pakistan has been ruled by it's military for most of its existence, India has never once had even a threat of a coup. Military rule typically works in countries that are homogenous (where a very large majority is of a single racial or ethnic background). Most of the countries in south America, middle-east and Pakistan fit that criteria. Indian army itself will disintegrate if we have military rule. Remember the rebellion by the Sikh regiment post Indira assasination. India needs a set of higher ideals to hold it together. I am afraid military rule will not provide that in a country as vast and as diverse as India. The closest thing we had to that was Mrs Gandhi's emergency rule, which failed.
