Not political spokespersons, only spinmeisters!
by Hebbar R on May 15, 2009 02:25 PM

The Author is quite right.

But, in the case of Moily, it is possible that his sacking itself was a big spin given by the Congress - to placate RJD/LJP. If there was an issue of punishment, why was Margaret Alva nominated by the Congress after the kind of allegation she made?

Similarly, the Media is talking about an edge to the Congress, just to give them a chance to cobble up allies. The actual election result may or may not be as predicted. If one sees the predictions of the past, it will be clear that rarely (if at all) have these predictions been right.

BJP & Cong spokespersons
by nazim on May 15, 2009 01:26 PM

Largely i agree with the writer. But there is a big diffrence between BJP & Cong 'representatives' appearing on TV.
BJP people seems to be better informed & better synchronised with the party line, they have a stand to take, they have something to argue and more importantly seems to know something about the party's intentions.
Poor Cong guys, I really pity them. Clueless, the fear of loosing tongue & subsequently losing job is largely written on their face, no individuality whatsoever. They know only as much we (viewers) all know. So they stick to the basics...simply claiming congress victory, same old Modi bashing and communal/secular bakwas. Basically they dont have any info to offer...poor guys. Such is the case with seniors & performers like sheila dixit.
Another striking diffrence is when BJP spokesperson talks he is addressing to the people & the objective is to woo the voters. On the other hand when a Cong spokesperson talks he is addressing to the anchor & his objective is to woo his top command & her family.

TRP Ratings
by Nandakumar rajagopal on May 15, 2009 12:44 PM  | Hide replies

just as deposits, mutual funds or companies get rated for their reliability a TV channel too should be rated for its unbiased and neutral views. For this an independant group of eminant people( who are in no way connected to the media like dailies, news magazines, TVs, film world or ad agencies) after viewing the programmes randomly for a period of six months should rate them as two stars for the best, one star for not bad. This could be reviewed every six months. Once the ratings come TV channels especially will fear it as it would be directly affected by ads they receive. People like NDTV or CNN-IBN still will thrive on sponsorship by congys. But people who desire to see a rated TV will start avoiding it. In the lon run it would pay.

There is already TRP ratings which help advertizers to identify the amount of money they shell out of ads. What is needed is for people to stop watching programs where Anchors come without any homework and feel that they can get away.

New channels

Its a serious need to of time that they brough under impartial regulatroy such as TRAI or IMRDA or some ombudsman like Banking Ombudsman.

Many individuals may be injusticed due to non factual reporting of news by journalists (or news traders as Narendra Modi calls them). Some news may even instigate some section of society against other.

Live coverage of 26/11 which helped terrorists track movement of security forces, political bias that influences voters, Rat Race of TRP (thats why Varun Gandhi, Modi and crime stories get more coverage than social problems or performance of goverment),Making issues and controversies out of nothing than attention to national issues.Aishwarya's karwa chot festival, etc.

All this just to sell the news.

But million dollar question is who is going to bell the cat ? May be we can stop watching channels that practise this, could be the partial solution.

if you watch Sun News for half an hour in the 7o'clock slaught you will be forced to watch ads for atleast ten mints that too without any gap. I switch channels and come back only for the news. In English channels there is a gap of two minutes every ten minutes. NDTV tkae more time for ads than any other channel. NEWS X seem to be the only channel with least ads.

Spokesmen are needed for 24 hr TV
by Salem Sathyamurthy on May 15, 2009 11:48 AM

The political spokesmen appearing on TV these days are filling the same role as the one played by some musicians in olden days of All India Radio. The only time they came on Air was to mourn some one's passing away and they were very busy for the next ten days.

Like them these spokesmen attend to the needs of Channels and have no clue of what is happening in the party, probably have no briefing from their political heads, and have nothing to say, just like the anchors have nothing to ask. The trick is to do as less home work as possible and hope for picking on words that fall in the during the discussion.
The news channels need some one to sit there and these persons are fulfilling the role. It is also the time for their 10 secs glory.
All we have to do is listen to them for 5 second, realise their hallow discussion, and switch the channel and watch some sports or music channel!

We shameless Indians
by Jitesh Agrawal on May 15, 2009 11:27 AM  | Hide replies

The spineless character that India has shown under UPA and congress over the years has lead to a situation where now even US has openly started interferring into Indian politics. There involvement behind the scenes was for there for all times but now they have come out in open and in few years will be giving orders to India.

No doubt we are gradually going the pakistan way. No nationalist feelings just enjoy life, dont look any further beyond your nose and complain and crib when feel cheated, thats how Indians are.

Wonder how come people dont feel shame to see goons and scoundrels who might not have completed a proper graduation deciding the policies and running the governance of this great nation. They are out to sleep anyone to get to power and loot.

WHERE ARE WE GOING AND WHAT IS THE FUTURE?????

Dear Jitesh,
While I fully agree with you about the UPA and I am also worried about the blatant US interference in Indian politics, I feel it is unfair to blame the UPA/Congress alone. Is not the stupid, immature Indian voter including you and me to blame too? We have been handing down fractured verdicts one after another ever since 1989 resulting in hung Parliaments and lame duck Govts. thereafter. This leaves the field wide open for busybodies like the US to meddle in our internal affairs. If we were to give our vote to one or two parties this would not happen at all. Remember the days of Indira Gandhi? Even the redoubtable Riuchard Nixon and Henry Kissinger had to eat crow. The US went to the extent of sending the 7th fleet to threaten us but Indira Gandhi never gave an inch. Why? Because besides her inner strength she had the immense support of the Indian voter and did not have to depend upon the crutches of 20-30 parties of varying ideologies and agendas. May God forgive the Indian voter for the damage that they are inflicting upon the country.

looks like all of them are in the payroll of the congress-rajdeep sardesai takes the cake--any prog will start with a sublimal image like "advantage UPA" etc.
The less said about NDTV the better.
All of them are like ostriches with their heads buried in the sand. The angry screeches, the scowls, the repititive questions makes one laugh at their naivety
of believing that all viewers are fools.

Why all these english channels have a bias towards BJP? words like Sangh Parivar, Saffron Brigade, Hindutva party,
anti minority party are used very frequently by these people. These are the words uttered contemptuously by the opposition parties in political circles. But why by these channels when they claim that they are the guardians of secularism. Are Hindus not included in the group of secular people or secular means only non hindus. These words reveal the real identity of these channels. The anchors of these channels deliberately cut the conversation or arguments in a group if they start running favourably towards BJP. In my opinion BJP politicians or the candidates they bring forward present comparitively a decent picture than other parties. In Gujarat muslims are safer than in UP.
