Dear JAIRAM Ramesh,

The peverty line should be based on earnings and expenditure to run the life to get ROTI ,KAPADA and MAKAN .
If the earnings are same if the prices escalated the people will go automatically to below poverty line . You have to agree the prices have gone up (now you say recession/global conditions etc but recession etc when you agree you have to agree also the people are going below poverty line . As article said "last year that the wealth of 20 richest Indians was greater than the combined assets of 30 crore poorest Indians"" . Congress goal will be complete TOP 100 Riches people wealth equal to 110 Crore Indian people then CONGRESS Goal will be fulfilled . That day is also not far will come soon Dont worry JAIRAMRAMESH you and your madam will be one from 100 not from 110 Crores you dont worry
REGARDS

Poverty of mind....
by Rajesh Shetty on Apr 03, 2009 03:50 PM  | Hide replies

Lets not care much about databases and statistics. I think the real indicator of progress is what percentage of the population has access to the most basic needs of life like proper nutrition, air, water and shelter. And if that percentage is increasing with every passing decade, then we can safely assume that all the steps taken by successive governments have been a mere facewash. Poverty due to financial condition is one thing, and still manageable. The biggest hurdle for any nation is poverty of mind. And it is this mental poverty or ignorance that has really been a hurdle in our country's progress. So unless Govts take concrete long term approach to improving education standards, we cant hope for much improvement. Its still an irony that in our vast country, millions worry about the next square meal while a hand few think about the next big deal.

What you are thinking of measuring is possible by means of statistics...just FYI, modern statistical models and methods are pretty accurate if done with right intent. People like Jayaram Ramesh will never believe the statistics that portray true picture about the mis-rule of congress. Sheela Bhatt is nobody else but a congress stooge...It looks like whole media establishment in India is playing in the hands of mafias just like it used to happen during old days. No point in listening to Sheela or Jayaram's tantrums.. Believe your own eyes if you do not want to believe stats..barring few states like Gujarat, Punjab, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu all are poor states in India where level of poverty has only increased. By creating shopping malls you can not eliminate poverty..a concrete action is required...which will go against congress as parties like Congress thrive on poor uneducated masses. So as long as parties like congress remain in power, India will never become developed nation.

NSS Survey on poverty
by RAJU KHAN on Apr 03, 2009 03:46 PM  | Hide replies

Mr Jairam Ramesh must be aware of as to who was responsible for carrying out suvey. Why did his Government did not carry out any survey for 5 years? And now he is shamelessly questioning independent assessment carried out by others. Shame on selfish congies.

NSS data on poverty

There are such good and highly qualified people in BJP (like Sudheendra Kulkarni), but most of them display a negative outlook and lack courtsey and humility in public life. They by far are the most arrogant lot and use their skills either in creating controversies or debating on the basis of technicalities on controversial issues. I wish if all of them use their energy in the right perspective and guiding the nation forward. Jai Hind

Definition of Poverty??
by Ketan Shetty on Apr 03, 2009 03:40 PM  | Hide replies

One interesting point all should note is the definition or standard of poverty.
I got to know the same during my brief interaction with a private hospital, which was ready to provide me free medical service if I was under poverty line or provide me 50% rebate if I was slightly above the poverty line.
I was surprised to know that I am poor if I earn less than Rs.3000/- per month. or else as per my beloved government, I am rich enough to pay my medical expenses of Rs.One Lac or more without any asistance from them

poverty is a relative term. even the richest man may feel poor because his needs would be much more than what he can afford to. if you have a 2-wheeler you think you are poor as you can't buy a car but when you buy a maruti 800 you still feel that you are poor because maruti 800 is a janta car and you would then long for a hyundai or honda. your medical bill of 1 lac is more than two or three years earnings of a farmer or farm labourer. so for a farmer or farm labourer you are rich by their standards whereas you are not, as per your standards. therefore the government reviews the situation from time to time and fixes a certain level of income to determine poverty.

Thanks for your inputs.
Just help to know, when was the last time govt has revised the limits of income poverty line.
Is the limit of income to determine poverty line standard throughout India?
