It is too low ,raise it
by Vishwa Vijayendra Singh on Mar 01, 2005 05:03 PM

Our country doesnt has any great image with the western countries.

In todays world where one has to sell himself..This is a very discouraging thing to see our prez's salary.

To attract FDI, Tourism the country is spending millions for Image Makeover.

I support any move to hike the prez's salary.
Thank u.

reminds me of Ranchi
by Amit on Feb 17, 2005 01:42 PM

Your article did remind me of my Ranchi days a lot!

from 1987 to 1997, Shyamlee (Mecon) Colony and Satallite township (of SAIL) were the education hubs with most of the IITians flowing out from these two colonies. the bulk of the remainder from HEC and CMPDI etc. I am sure those things would not have changed!

Its sad to know that neither the power condition, the roads, the autowalas, nor the politicians have changed. Ranchi has been the story of an opportunity gone begging. Dunno when things would change

navel gazing experince....
by rakesh on Feb 16, 2005 02:36 PM

ranchi may have changed apparently...but its the same ,the very same as it was earlier when it was part of Bihar......we brought up in chandwa,in latehar district ,some 75 km from Ranchi.....using lantern for our studies .....and even now studnets have no luxury in studying in bulbs.......15 years back students after passing their board exams had to move to ranchi ot patna...still the situation prevails......the same illiteracy rate..the same poverty level....the same unemployeed educated youngsters......what jharkhand has brought about any change?

Ranchi must have changed... but not the writer's mentality
by Vinay on Feb 15, 2005 05:35 PM

This is so funny, somebody writing about how things are changing in Ranchi but still some old crap still exist.. And he himself is so narrow-minded. Whole India is chaging, ppl are shedding their inhibations and coming out of the shell which is the biggest reason India is developing so fast..
Anyway.. Using a title like that, "Navel-gazing....." was nothing but a sign of writer's cheapo mentality, when the actual text has nothing to do with it. I have seen lot of Rediff writers doing that.. using punch lines like these to get attention.. I don't know when the writers would change.

i am not totally disagreeing with you regarding the power cuts but this is not for the whole of Ranchi. i would advise you to visit H.E.C colony where power used to be available only for 12 hours per day but is getting supply for 24 hours per day with no voltage related problems. As far as roads are concerned , at present they are under reconstruction (in the process of widening)so the condition is bad otherwise if you compare it with year 1994, they have improved.
the only difference is that the traffic has increased . this has happened since Ranchi became the capital of state. the education in Ranchi is one of the best for school levels(very good ICSE and CBSE schools CHECK OUT THE PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE GETTING SELECTED IN IITs, NITs, and medical colleges from schools like DPS,DAV Shyamali, etc.,check out the % obtained by students of 10th std. in icse & cbse boards in schools like Sacred Heart,Loreto Convent,etc.). i agree that for graduation it is not so good(as u mentioned the ranchi university).every state and every place has its' own merits and demerits. it was good that u could see both.

Wow,that was some newz!Being a native of Ranchi,I am always on a look out for something or the other about my sweet Ranchi. Its been quite a while that i left Ranchi to do a job in Delhi...certainly do miss the days spent in my home town.No doubt about the fact that the place has changed a great deal, not only in physiological aspects but also in the outlook people have.Hope to see Ranchi flourishing in the same manner in the near future!Amen!

Smita Sinha..

Feedback:-Navel-gazing in powerless Ranchi

I appreciate the way, this article has been presented. It is disappointing to know how Ranchi has (as most other cities in India) mis-interpreted the essence of "modernization".

jharkhand without adivasis?
by anand on Feb 15, 2005 05:35 AM

i read ur article about jharkhand.i think the fact that adivasis
are disappearing from areas in ranchi, which was written so
casually and infact sounded like the guy was happy about it,
is more concerning and important than to talk about women
wearing jeans!!come on, this is childish!this is fantasy
journalism!does the writer not see the sickness in his
priorities!its sad to hear that adivasis have to move away
from thier own lands.its surely more believable that they
were paid off poorly or even threatened to part with thier
own lands, than that they cooly sold thier land and have
gone into the jungles and buried thier money! THIS is a
matter of concern and importance ,and not navel gazing!
please dont encourage such shameful journalism.
im a 24 yr old, thinking young man, not necessarily a 60 yr
old.
