that's why I always revere G'kar & Kapil Dev. they testify manhood-intrepid even in the most adverse circs unlike tin gods of modern era of the ilk of vondulkars...

True Those days no limitations on bouncers,no covered wickets,no light meters for umpires,no helmets, no chest guards, gloves were primitive but game had some of the best fast bowlers of post world war
There is no doubt that Sunil Gavaskar was the best opening batsman we had. He had to face the pace batteries of West Indiies, Australia and Pakistan in his playing days and at the same time remain in the pitch and score runs. Our middle order was then mediocre and that is why we could not win many test matches. In the area of bowling, except for our spinners, we had very little to boast of in the bowling department.
Yes, I also think that Sunil Gavaskar is the best Opener. I rememeber his debut series against West Indies where he faced the greats Like Marshal, Roberts, Garner and if I am not wrong, scored around 700 runs in 5 Tests

Rajeev Mathur your memory is very weak. Marshal, Roberts, Garner did not play any test in that series. Gavaskar did score 774 runs but he played 4 tests. The fast bowling attack of the West Indies consisted of Holder, Shilingford, Dowe, Shephard, Sobers etc. Brush up your memory.
K srikant is the best opener in the world of all time followed by WV Raman and Sadagopan Ramesh, of the present lot Murali Vijay and Abhinav Mukund are best

Even the most fanatic Iyengar will be not be so parochial. Srikanth was a hit or miss guy, had sweet timing and guts to take on Marshalls, Garners and Holdings. He was electrifying and an entertaining man.
Gavaskar is a legend. You can learn how to bat by watching him. How to wait for the ball to do its work and then caress it. His straight drive is an epitome of elegance.
No doubt was very talented and played against probably the best battery of pace bowlers ever to bowl.On the flip side,he could have done better in not stiffling Gundappa Vishwanath's career who in my opinion was a more complete batsmen of that era.
