Ashwin ???
by sriram kannan on Jan 08, 2013 03:53 PM  | Hide replies

Comparing him with Harbhajan and kumble is not correct..they will not bowl at the powerplay and those time only 15 overs are for powerplay and only 4 fielders restriction was there..now it is increased to 5 fielders.. Also we need to judge how the captain utilize Ashwin..it is not fair to blindy say that he is not performing. even styne can be looks like a ordinary bowler if the captain sets a defensive field..dhoni can be little more aggressive in field setting and bowling changes..Aslo Ashwin is good low order batsmen if we use it properly

Agree to your points. In Australia tests, he scored more runs than MSD and Laxman :)

I had read an article on cricinfo regarding his bowling saying he is not afraid to tempt the batsman to hit shots and get wickets. If he is like that, he can be a good bowler. But nowadays, his bowling has changed for the worse.

also it depends on batsmen and captain ..what score they set to defend and what is the expectation of captain from the bowler...i think dhoni just handle Ashwin as a container and not as a wicket taker...if we have big score on the board then the bowler can bowl confidently..

I am by no means a supporter of Dhoni, but I dont think this is just Dhoni's problem. Ashwin's tactics of bowling has changed drastically whereas Dhoni's field setting is defensive more often than not. Ashwin has a lot of variations, but looks like he is also trying everything possible (which does not work always). It may work well in T20, but definitely not in ODIs or tests.
I was really amazed when he took those first 50 wickets (Dhoni's field setting was the same even then). After that, it is like a spiral. WIckets have trickled. For the same fieldset, Ojha is doing better, but slightly. He took 20 wickets as against Ashwin's 14 in the test series.

Still he is rubbish in any conditions and he is in the team only because of Srinivasan-CSK links. If not he could have been history by now. Where was the mystery ball which he was boasting off?

that was the reall turnoff point in the series (boasting). the point is, our team had totally underestimated the english team thinking they will cave in like 2011 series n India.

I second your opinion with you. We have to be prepared for another thumping by Aus at our own backyard..Nothing is going to change in our Country with our fans and the board. Once the IPL kickstarts, everything will be forgotten and these useless idiots will be pocketing millions of rupees in their account..Nobody from the board will care for the cricket unless the politicians and the business men stop dictating the terms in the cricket board. Its high time saviours like Kumble, Dravid, Ganguly, Kapil, Amarnath and some more wishful thinkers should takeover the board. Strictly no to the Mumbai commentators club and Kris Srikanth...

ASHWIN MUST GO BACK TO DRAWING BOARD
by damodaran mohan on Jan 08, 2013 03:31 PM  | Hide replies

The media it must be admitted are double faced. The selectors, they are dammed if they do and dammed if they don't. Dropping Sehwah is a right move to look to the future. His presence at the top is nothing short of gamble which induces a false "hope" demoralizing the side once he gets out quickly which is happening 9 out of 10 times. W/o Sehwag team will be more realistic with reasonable expectations and look for just a good solid start but not a rollicking start. So psychologically there will be no demoralizing effect on the team even if the now lesser openers get out quickly. Besides, Sehwag is very slow in the field making world of difference in ground fielding as seen in the Kotla match. As regards Gambhir, Rohit Sharma and Ashwin, they also must have got the right message from Sehwag’s dropping.Rohit of course could e setting record of IN-OUTs from the national side and perhaps will continue till his retirement. Ashwin on the other hand will have to go back to the drawing board if he has to keep is place in the side. He has to do the basics right because he is hardly spinning the ball even on turning tracks ! His almost entire effort appears to be mid-stump ball to get LBW. It might be Ok for T20 matches where batsman play across more often but in TESTs and one dayers they will just block it. Taking just one wkt per match , any body can do.Why pick Ashwin alone ?

Could not have said it better.

Ashwin's performance: 5 wickets in 5 ODIs in Srilanka, 5 wickets in 3 matches in Dhaka, 7 wickets in 7 matches in Australia. Latest is 3 wickets in 3 ODIs against Pak.
It looks like some part time bowlers's performance.

I am sure even Yuvraj can do better than this.

TEAM INDIA
by Gokul Sharma on Jan 08, 2013 03:13 PM  | Hide replies

Dhoni has still capacity to explode, which he has shown in last three ODI. Any captain with a weaker team and with so much pressure will not be in a position to excel. But, Dhoni of late has proved his capacity. Give a captain quality batsmen and bowelers, he will certainly do well. Dhoni is a physically fitter player than most of other Indian players. Kapil Dev is praising Dhoni's hard work capability, as cricket is meant for fit players only.

absolutely if batsmen fail it is not because of the captan. and if the managers of the game r corrupt why should any individual put any effort to win a game for india.

Finally a well written article
by Arv Singh on Jan 08, 2013 03:08 PM

Rediff finally came up with an honest article on performance of Indian players. I agree with the author that Gambhir, Rohit, and Asswin escaped firing .. probably thanks to a godfather in BCCI. Kohli and Raina needs to pull up their socks seriously.

Numbers don't lie and performance of Asswin has been pathetic considering he was bowling at home on spin friendly wickets. Kumble and Harbhajan used to be unplayable even against stronger sides like Australia. Ojha is much better than Asswin but Harbhajan's aggression and tidy spells in the middle overs are sorely missed.
