Ponting has lost 16 matches as captain. Would be amazing to see against whom he has lost most?
Probably India!

out of those losses once he lost to dravid's indian team and against dhoni's team india he made 0 out of 4...forget a win...not even a single draw!

and the one he lost in mumbai against dravid he did it in 2 and half days! even after taking a first innings lead of over 100 runs! i dont think any other aus captain lost in less time!

he had two draws in 2008 in the matches that Kumble captained. And he lost two in the matches that Dhoni captained.

dhoni will remain captain even if he looses 15 matches in a row till the time N SRINIVASAN is there in the BCCI.

He has made dhoni VP of india cements, this only happens in India

your comments do not go with your name. Have respect for Tiger Pataudi. He was the youngest captain at 21 yrs and 77 days against a fearsome Windies in Windies. He was handed the captaincy when on tour and he had the heart to lead India. He got us our first overseas series win in 1968 v NZ. Just don't make statements for the heck of it.

That means he should have led an oversears team. Unsuccessful in India but successful overseas, doesn't make any sense.

you will be amazed to know that Kapil had only 4 wins (30 draws - he couldn't help the pitches and rain) and 2 were in England in a series win!

I think they shud also put those 2 categories ,how many victories at home and away and if possible against which opposition. That will show the true worth of the captain.

Selectors deserve all the credit

What amazes me is the selectors of India have managed to stop captains from leading the team for 50 matches or more . . . . Saurav, Azhar, Sunny all stopped through murky ways. Wonder why they put in their weight behind Dhoni even after 8 straight losses overseas and series loss at home !!!

sorry lost. The selectors could not drop Dhoni as captain for two reasons: (1) No other choice in current team - Gambhir and Sehwag shaky and Kohli too young. (2) His record as captain overall has been good considering ODIs and T20. So, he has been given a long rope. But this series is his last chance. He has taken it vely and has started off well with a win and a great knock. Let's hope he can sustain this and carry it forward.

Ravi Iyer, it seems you are ignorant of the fact that in the last tests against aus dhoni was banned for one test for slow over rate of indian bowlers...it was sehwag who captained in his place and india lost the 4th test against aus too by 298 runs even though dhoni did not play in the test either as a captain or as a player...

so the fact is that out of the 8 straight losses against eng and aus...dhoni was captain in 7 tests and sehwag in 1 test...

But Sourav would never be able to beat the current captain's "record (!!!!)" of 8 straight losses in overseas test matches !!! Sourav was too good a captain to own such a record.

actually dhoni also does not hold that ''record'' (!!!) of 8 straight loss in overseas test matches!!!

also he was a lot luckier than dhoni that he got fit players most of the time who did not break down DURING the match and had to do with less than 11 players in his side!

something that dhoni had to face many times...he had to captain the side many times with times with 2.5 or 3 or 3.5 bowlers with players not playing because of injury or fitness problems...

the indian players were mentally and physically very tired after constant/nonstop cricket and both ganguly and kirsten are very very very lucky that they were not in charge of the indian team at that particular point of time...or they would have been the proud owner of dhoni's ''record''

Ganguly shivering in his boots ?? Really?? When ?? When he hit a 144 on pacy greentop at Brisbane in 2003 ?? Or when he hit a 128 at Headingley in 2002 again on a greentop and in cloudy conditions ? Or at Melbourne in the 3rd test in 2004 when he came ahead of out-of-form Sachin Tendulkar ??

A captain is as good as his team. But a captain playing well is in his own hands. On this count, Dhoni has bettered Ganguly. He has more runs with a better average compared to Ganguly. When Dada was captain, his deputy Dravid had a 102 average in wins! That helped Dada tremendously. Not to undermine Dada's leadership skills. Both were good in their own way. Dada was always available for the team whereas Dhoni could not respond to VVS's calls. I could not digest this given how cool and down to earth Dhoni is even in success.

yes ravi thats why i never rated sachin highly...his records were mostly made in friendly conditions or when there was little or no pressure...it was dravid laxman and sehwag who were much more consistent and responsible for indian wins in the last decade...just like it was dravid who batted fantastically under ganguly it was also laxman and sehwag because of whom we won most of the times...while sachin ran away with the credit which not due to him...

agree. Let's look at Sachin's tons in Aus - 1st tour - 1991-92, one draw and one lost. 1999-00 one lost, 2003-04 flat pitch - India makes 705 and a draw, 2008 - Sydney (this was the only one we could have won had the umpires not decided to give it to Aus) and Adelaide - a flat pitch and a draw. 2011-12 none. Dravid got us 233 and 72* in Adelaide in 2003-04 and 93 highest score in the match in Perth 2008.

record would have been much better had our team played to their potential in england and australia.it was a constant faliure of every player selected in the team.batsman bowler all were out of form.but our rediif experts put all the blame on sachin and dhoni.no one gave a thought how others performed.laxman dravid veeru, gauti, sachin,ms,zaheer, bhazzi, ishant all failed then why to blame only sachin and dhoni.if india was winning matches in those country it was because sachin dravid laxman kumble and zaheer used to perform there.but this time they didnt.and result was in front of u.

True.

The problem is most of us relate to a particular celebrity in various ways.

It seems that when a particular celebrity fails on a few instants, the so called 'supporters' jump in to vent out their offline frustrations.
