India hopeless
by Narayanan Mahalingam on Feb 20, 2013 08:24 PM  | Hide replies

This Aussie team will sting India. Clark and Warner will hammer the bowling at will.
Looks like Aussies are playing to their strength of fast bowling and they will make life hot for our IPL heroes.

Hopefully, we see the end of some careers in a month down the line.

I don't think Australian bowlers will find it easy. With the selection of 3 spinners, it's more than likely, that the pitches will be dry and slow. After the initial swing dies down with the new ball, Australian bowlers don't really have anyone who can use the old ball to do reverse swing.

ind spinner's downside
by vinay on Feb 20, 2013 08:22 PM  | Hide replies

when kumble n harbhajan both were playing, harbhajan spporters were blaming that due to kumble, harbhajan's calibre player(!) is kept out of the xi (when only one spinner was to b taken). now after retirement of kkumble, harbhajan's calibre has come to surface!!!

it was after kumble retired that we became no. 1...it was after kumble retired that under dhoni we began to win tests after tests...thanks to our bowlers including harbhajan...

count how many tests we won in the next 20 tests after kumble retired and compare them with the no, of tests we won in the last 20 tests that kumble played...

kummble played 132 tests in which we won 43 (32%) lost 33 (25%) drew 56 (42%)

harbhajan played 99 tests in which we won 40 (40%) lost 26 (26%) and drew 33 (33%)

harbhajan avg e/r s/r
32.27       2.84       68.1
kumble avg e/r s/r
29.65       2.69       65.9
anytime better. but the point is kumble was perceived as blocking place of harbhajan.

the point is harbhajan too is good and it is not correct to say that kumble was everything and harbhajan nothing...

in fact if you check the records...when time came to chose only 1 spinner it will come as a surprise to you to know that ganguly preferred harbhajan instead of kumble...

kumble played 31 tests under ganguly captaincy and harbhajan played 37 tests under ganguly captaincy....it is very clear from the figures whom out of the 2 ganguly preferred to take in his team...

Sunil Vaidya the Goofball,
Test rankings are based on performance over the time. And what we accomplished under Kumble and Ganguly brought us the #1 ranking in Test..

And Dhoni's successor in Test will suffer for a while for what India has dne under Dhoni in Test cricket..

Now get lost.

very well said solid singh....sehwag, laxman dravid sachin always overshadowed dhoni in their contribution in defeats...

and yes how much dhoni is a dud in tests can be seen from his contribution in test wins...if you care to look it up...he has done no less than batsmen like laxman, gambhir, ganguly, vishwanath, gavaskar etc. check these players contributions in indian test wins and compare them with dhoni's contribution in test wins...

solid singh dhoni is not a passer by in test format....on the contrary he is our most successful wicket keeper batsmen...leave aside his captaincy for a while...

tell me which indian wicket keeper who played till now has better record as a wicket keeper and batsman till date? dhoni already has more than 500 international wickets behind the stumps and by the time he calls it a day it will be close to 1000 wickets...

solid singh..any body is better in tests than dhoni??? ROTFLMAO...LOLOLOLOL...

there are many specialist batsmen both from india and abroad who are lesser batsmen than dhoni...

check his record with batsmen from all countries and you will find that he is better than many specialist batsmen who played cricket...

if you want a few names then you can check stephen fleming, hansie cronje, michael atherton etc.....who were specialist batsmen and also captains of their national cricket team...

yes goofball Ram Shyam, dhoni's successor in test will have his job cut up...let us see whether he can be as successful as dhoni in tests....dhoni has led us to no 1 ranking in tests and maintained it for quite some time...so if india is not no 1 when that successor takes up dhoni's job as a captain let us see whether like dhoni he will lead india to no 1 rank in tests and how long will he maintain the status...

Under Dhoni, most of the victories(in fact all) came against SL,NZ and WI,which currently are way below in the test ranking.A team's performance is judged by the way it plays against better test playing teams,in which case India has a abysmal record with Dhoni at helm.

Why do they keep writing repeatedly that Indian batting line up is without the batting greats like Dravid and Laxman ?? Do they forget that Team India had been crushed by England and Australia with both of them very much being in the team in 2011 and 2012 tours??

My point is that it's not about legendary batsmen with great records that matters. What matters is good leadership. Batting greats with great stats come and go. Undue importance shouldn't be given to great stats. The recipe for good results against tough teams is a decent team with a purposeful captain. Remember how Team India beat England at Headingley in 2002 by an innings and Australia at Adelaide in 2003 ?
