musings of a 50 year old
by vandiyathevan on Mar 03, 2012 01:29 PM  | Hide replies

hi
as a fifty year old who has been following cricket since 1970s i can say nothing has changed over the years except that at least our team now gives back to the aussies and english in their own terms at sledging. The infighting, nepotism, regionalism was all there since 1970s or may be before that too! There have been cases when change of captain was announced over the inflight addres system while flying from london to india!
About gavaskar, first let him give the reason for batting for full 60 overs and hitting 36 runs in a world cup match, the reason for almost conceding a match when he was given lbw, his dropping of kapildev during a series! Sometimes it makes me puke, when you listen to ravi, gavaskar, and yesteryear guys talking about discipline, spirit when they practiced none of it! or may be they were the offenders so they know it better?

They are not citing themselves as references or people who have left benchmarks. They are just commenting on the current state of affairs and performances, based on their observation. It could be anybody gavaskar, shastri, bhogle, akram etc. Don't see who is passing the comments, just see what they are commenting and its befitting or not.

In total agreement with your column,I say these so called ex self claimed champions of yester years are really out of work nowa days and their only paying hobby is to write nonsense about our cricket team esp when they do not perform well abroad.Nobody bothered about Aussies losing the game, but India losing a tight game is fully dissected threadbare.Indian press should stop paying these good for nothing men and channels should avoid them like plague. Then Indian cricket will improve.Todays players are not emotional to their failures and that should be the correct attitude.Iam 66 yrs old and a follower of this game. Thanks

Shame
by Ramdas Nayak on Mar 03, 2012 12:58 PM

When cricket fans in whole country hung their heads in shame these cricketers still smile as if they achieved great things for us. Why should they worry for dropped catches or loose fielding. They are unruffled Even by repeated routs by different rivals as financially every match would give them more money as per contract. Taake for instance cases of Rohit Sharma and Ravi Jadeja. For nothing they gained lakhs of rupees for the matches played. BCCI even reselected these players for Asia Cup as if there is no good player in this country of 120 crore people

Hard to understand the psyche of Indian team: Gavaskar
by zrehmaan on Mar 03, 2012 12:57 PM  | Hide replies

I totally agree with Gavaskar when he says that "When they get through an achievement like a fifty, hundred or a wicket they snarl, snap and swear but when they drop a catch, they smile... it should be the other way round". This type of attitude is displayed when the matches are either fixed or worthless. In the case of our Indian Team, I believe the latter is true, it was quite evident from the body language of our players that they just wanted to wind-up and come back soon so that they can start afresh for the IPL. This indian team is a disgrace to our nation, its unfortunate for the country and the fans but the players are fortunate enough as they can still continue playing for the national team.

It takes a lot of effort to make a 50/100. When they snarl, it is an expression of how hard they tried and how much they wanted it. when somebody smiles at a 50/100 it means they were not ready to die to get it, that is why there is no emotional release.

You smile when there is a catch drop etc, because you want to move on and still win the game, instead of crying over spilt milk. They have the correct attitide, it is guys like gavaskar who never have had the correct attitude.

India is losing because Harbhajan is not in the team

A class all-rounder like harbhajan is not in the team thats why India is losing.
Bring back Harbhajan and just see how Indian team's performance improves.

I dont think Harbhajan Singh (in his present form) could have made any difference..... Sadly, he is not tasting success even in Ranji.

We need to get rid of all golden oldies irrespective of whether the juniors are as good as them - only by giving responsibility the juniors will grow.

Mr. Sunil Gavaskar
by Sowri Rajan on Mar 03, 2012 12:35 PM  | Hide replies

Here are the reasons for the dismal performance of India overseas:
1. Hype about Sachin Tendulkar scoring his 100th century
2. Differences between Dhoni and Sehwag. Obviously, they both will deny it. You can see them clearly in their press conferences.
3. Bowling dollies - Zaheer, Irfan and Praveen bowling is like fast off spin. Of course, Yadav is fast, but not economical.
4. Failing to blood in youngsters in place of 'seniors' instead of rotating rotten tomatoes.
5. Dhoni's egoistic decisions like waiting for the 50th over to finish a match and asking part-time bowlers to bowl 49th and 50th over.
6. Selection of the team based on past performance.

Points listed are very correct. The selectors are to be blamed in the very first instance. See the team announced for Asia Cup. The same players except for dropping Sehwag. This itself shows that Selectors have not at all taken the issue seriously. Gavaskar having an influential say in the team selection may be talking after total rout only to please general public.
