Great World Cup Victory Indeed!!!
by SANKAR RAMAN on Jun 26, 2012 10:00 AM

Yes I watched the Final on B&W TV. When Indians got only 183 and Viv Richrds was blazing with a blistering innings all of us lost hopes and thought that Viv would finish it off single handedly. The only hope given to Indians was Mr Freddie Truman an zEnglish player who strongly believed that India will win and alas after that brilliant catch from Kapil tides turned in favour of India. The fantastic thing was that India had 4 all rounders in Kapil, Amarnath, Binny and Madan Lal. All the Indian players including Sunil Gavaskar contributed( Sunil with 4 catches) to the fanous and great victory.A fantastic moment in life and a victory for every Indian. To beat England, Australia and West Indies within a space of a week a trmendous effort and hats off to Kapil's men.I will cherish the memory and a great moment in my life for ever.

looking at fix matches now adays, one can say that match 83 wc may the first fix match that india managed to get in kapil dev captaincy. And there after azhar uddin fixed and buyed so many matches for india. One thing we must appreciate that these peoples were great as they always fixed for indian victory. It is not yet prooved that azhar fixed any match to make india loose. Generally you can see pakistani and other country players are fixing matches to make pakistan and their country loose the match for the sake of big money.

Oh those days.

Watched in on our B&W Solidaire TV. I was only 10 years old but still remember this game. The spectators were allowed to run into the field when game is over (don't know when the fences came up). Actually India followed this with Benson and Hedges,Rothman trophy and Sharjah which I remember more clearer. Anyways those were great days.
P.S: Not related to this, but I enjoyed watching the wimbledon games too.

Do you mean Boom Boom Boris and Pat Cash show ?

Yes,you write those victories in Australia and Sharjah had immense emotional impact and pushed all other sports in the country to a very bad situation.

India won olympic gold in hockey in 1980 and after 1983 India could not win a single gold medal in olympics till 2008.The hang_over was so intense and inflicting.

Thanks to Olympic Gold Quest run by Prakash_Padukone and Mittal Champions Trust run by Mahesh_Bhupathi and Amit_Bhatiya,sportsmen from other sports are getting the necessary encouragement of late. And I expect that India will win 10-15 medals in shooting, archery, badminton, boxing etc in London 2012.

It is very important that India wins more medals in Olympics because olympic medal tally is searched and viewed in the entire world whereas cricket score card is viewed only mostly in third world countries like India,Pakistan,Bangladesh, etc and cricket scores does not give us global respect and If India can manage to be in top 20,the world will feel that India is really an emerging power house...

If India can manage to be in top 20 in the OLYMPIC MEDAL TALLY,the world will feel that India is really an emerging power house...

First tv was bought to watch funeral of Indira_Gandhi.

In 1983,I just remember my father telling that India won the world cup.The news was also repeatedly heard in the Marconi_radio.

The feeling of the win was gradually sinking in.It took several years to build up.Frankly speaking, cricket craze for me started in 1985 during Bensen_and_Hedges cup in Australia which India eventual won.Ravi Shastri was excellent and his MOM prize Audi car was talk of the town.

If I look back today,I feel B&H trophy was more creditable than the 1983 world cup win.It seemed to me India won 1983 world cup due to three reasons:

1)Over confidence of West Indies

2)Kapil Dev and his performance with the bowl and his 176 against Zimbabwe, that was the turning point.

3) India performed well due to consistent performance and team spirit of average players like Madan_lal,Roger_Binny,Shrikanth,Gavaskar,etc.

4) The other exceptional player was Mahinder Amarnath. His batting was most consistent but his slow bowling was lethal as batsman used to get irritated and lose patience and ultimately get out.

It was all ok that India reached final. But defeating West Indies was a fluke_and media hype! India won due to over confidence of the mighty West Indies rather than their own right. To prove the point,WI came touring India after the world cup and thrashed India 5-0 in the ODI series.

If that day WI won,I think only in 2011,for the first time India would win the cup.

Ravi Shastry got the Audi Car because of MOS, not MOM.

Moderate Voice
I remember the whole game
by Moderate Voice on Jun 26, 2012 05:02 AM

Gavaskar caught in slips of Andy Roberts.
Krish Shrikkant's upper cut of Garner and then six of Roberts. His 38 was memorable until Malcolm Marshall got him lbw.
Mohinder Amarnath's steady innings and his square cut for four. Then getting out to a beauty from Michael Holding.
Small contributions from Yashpal, Sandeep Patil, Roger Binny and Kirti Azad. 183 all out.

Then ball of the game until then... Balwinder Sing Sandhu gets Gordon Grenidge with a beauty. Llyod gets out. Richards wants to finish things in a hurry and then gets caught by a running Kapil Dev off Madan Lal(after match IVA Richards says of Madan Lal that he runs faster than he bowls). Larry Gomes gone.... but Jeff Dujon revives hope for WI and sinks Indian restlessness before cool cucumber Jimmy Amarnath takes crucial wickets and the VICTORY.

Its all fresh in my mind. Charging Jimmy with stump, the sad West Indian who bet all his money lying on the ground, the Champagne, Shrikkant smoking, Gavaskar smiling, Jimmy and Roger celebrating, placards saying "Kapil's devils win World cup" & "Kapil the curry King", the black coats with Indian emblem...
my cousin and I running around the house yeah! we won! we won!

Imran Khan the looser then says "At last the World Cup comes to Asia."

Clean Victory Is good..
by SACHIN KAPOOR on Jun 26, 2012 04:58 AM

All victories are good if it came without any fixing and controversies.

Today you can't trust this game, as so many fixters are involved.

At that time this match may be cleaned because of lack of communication tools. But this victory is special one..

by Another Critic on Jun 26, 2012 02:23 AM

As there was no live telecast on T.V. in 1983 I did not even know World Cup was happening. The only thing I remember was I used to roam everywhere freely without wearing cheddies. These are my 1983 World Cup memories.
