Was playing gotis with my cheddi dost without wearing my cheddi
by Another Critic on Jun 26, 2012 02:23 AM

As there was no live telecast on T.V. in 1983 I did not even know World Cup was happening. The only thing I remember was I used to roam everywhere freely without wearing cheddies. These are my 1983 World Cup memories.

I was just in kindergarten then. Only the tenant owner had a B&W TV in his house and few of the occupants had gone to his house to watch the final moments. It was too early for me to understand what was going on excatly but knew one thing that India is winning something big in cricket. There was a houge roar when it actually happened.

Whatever it is, it was the turing point in the sporting folklore of this country. The emergence of cricket and a slow death of other sports. From a game cricket became a sport and then a religion. Then people starting selling it for money aka IPL.

I would still love to see the cricket the way it was played till 80's and early 90's. That was a sporting contest between the bat and the ball. Now the batsmen know the ball is going to land in the (1 ft wide * 3 ft high) area of their offstump. Anything else is wided!

Good one Raghu. Funnier thing is, they announce scores in the news, but scores at 8:00 pm will be told if the news is going on at 8:30 pm. Thats the specialty of DD. But the best thing was there was no Arun Lal, Ramiz Raja, Amir Sohail, L Shivaramkrishnan, etc in the commentary box.

I was listening to radio commentary. I switched off radio when Richards started hitting boundaries. After few minutes when I switched on I was overjoyed to know 5 wickets were down. tension grew up again when Jeffery Dujon stayed. Finally ever dependable Amarnath broke the partnership. And who can forget Sandhu's dream ball and Kapil's magnificent catch.
everything is etched in my memory

looking at fix matches now adays, one can say that match 83 wc may the first fix match that india managed to buy in kapil dev captaincy. And there after azhar uddin fixed and buyed so many matches for india. One thing we must appreciate that these peoples were great as they always fixed for indian victory. It is not yet prooved that azhar fixed any match to make india loose. Generally you can see pakistani and other country players are fixing matches to make pakistan and their country loose the match for the sake of big money.

Are you ignorant or just one of those guys who has started floating with the neo-generation cricket fever with little or no knowledge?
