Gavaskar forced out ????
by Harish Pandit on Dec 20, 2012 07:47 AM  | Hide replies

Sunil Gavaskar retired as the indian captain after winning the 1985 World Cup. He retired from ODI after scoring his century in 1987 World cup. In his last test match is scored 96 against Pakistan on an absolute turner. In 1988, in the bicentinial match he scored a massive hundred (188). Where did the writer get the idea that he was forced out ?

In 1985 there was a "mini" world cup held in australia. Ravi Shastri won the famous "audi" in it. India won all the five matches taking 49 of the 50 possible wickets. Gavaskar was the indian captain. If u need more facts "Goldie" look it up.

Gavaskar retired in 1987 after the "Reliance" world cup. He had annouced his retirement first and then scored is century.

In 1988 a "Bicentinial" test match was organized to commemorate the 100 years of test cricket. It was an unofficial test match. Gavaskar had retired in 1987 but played and scored a massive 100.

Since 1984 onwards, he was on wane. But he was still India's premier batsman.

I know my facts very very well. I watched them and was there. And i sincerely doubt u have the ability to think.

If I am not wrong he scored a double hundred for world XI at Lords just before he anounced his retirement.

he should retire.

Why media and BCCI is not making hue and cry in the case of Sachin's retirement as they did in the cases of Dravid and Lakshman. Both took wise decisions before they were thrown out. This gentleman will not announce until he is thrown out. He is feeling young after changing his hair style.Does not understand time has come to retire.

sachin is our next test captain against the Aussies. After series he will retire alongwith zaheer khan. Atleast zaheer khan can tell that he retired along with sachin.

The Dawn is wrong about Sunil Gavaskar
by Palvannan Palani on Dec 19, 2012 09:14 PM  | Hide replies

While many cricketers may have gone through a fading performance forcing them to quit, The Dawn is not correct in including Sunil Gavaskar in the list. In fact Sunil Gavaskar scored a classic fighting 96 in his last official Test innings at Bangalore against a strong Pakistan team on a rank turner of a pitch at Bangalore and almost won the Test for India, while his fellow team members fell by the way side. Also, the decison that gave him out was proven to be a wrong one thus depriving him of a Great Century in his last innings. Call it Fate ! Additionally in terms of a so called final innings to chose to announce the real curtains on his cricketing days, he announced it at Lords playing for the World Eleven and where he scored, if I remember right, something aroud 180 runs ! In the present scenario, if a batsman hit 90s in his final test, surely he will not retire at tht moment, coz he will tell the team tht if he can hit 90,he can hit century also, and the story continues....

Sunny's retirement was on a high!
by RAVI GANAPATHY on Dec 19, 2012 07:50 PM  | Hide replies

Sunil Gavaskar was not forced out; he went on a high after scoring 96 in a lost cause (by a handful of runs) in his last Test innings in a square turner at Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore against Pakistan. It was Kapil who was waiting to break Hadlees's record and others from Pak who had faded out before retiring.

Its not right to compare Sunny and Sachin since Sachin unlike Sunny was never a good player of spin. Apart from Warne his record against other spinners like Murali are not worth speaking. This might be the reason for him not playing many local Ranji matches and thus missing huge scoring opportunities. This failure of Sachin need not be discussed much since Sachin record in bowler friendly pitches(He scored in England and Australian when they had only fast medium bowlers) are not good and I am sure in the next Australian series batting pitches will be prepared for Sachin to score, which I am sure he will.

Bharat Ratna
by Raj Thackeray on Dec 19, 2012 07:40 PM  | Hide replies

It seems the clamor for Tendulkar to be awarded Bharat Ratna is being buried under the clamor for his retirement or his removal from the team. How soon fortunes of a player changes.
But he himself is responsible for this situation. A player who can't understand his own limitations and failings is certainly not a great player notwithstanding whatever he may have done or achieved in the past.

Sachin will not retire due to contracts that he signed. Most of them won't expire till 2014.
May be he is weighing the option to buyout the contract.
I wonder what do we have in store with regards to Dhoni.

Exciting as always the current Cricket situation in India.
