I for one would have loved him to keep to play another 1 year. He definitely has some stuff left in him.

why only laxman? nobody on the criket team should take retirement !!!. let the youngsters rot..
If performance in a given period of time is yardsick for staying in the team, not only VVS but Ishant, Gambhir and Dhoni has to be dropped. If sole intent of BCCI is the induction of Sharma, then BCCI's dirty intention is clear. VVS was asked to quit the squad after two test against NZ. He deserves commend for slapping the BCCI by self retiring ahead of BCCI's humiliating offer.
Would like mention, that India's victory/win in test actually started only after the 281 from VVS. India was a different team after that. Good to retire before people/media asking him about retirement... (see Sachin probably every one in the world is asking him to retire)..
With the kind of batsman he was and the kind of match saving/winning innings he played one after the other, he certainly was very special... someone who didn't get enough credit for what he contributed on every occassion. It will be difficult to find a suitable replacement close enough to match his caliber. Thanks to him for entertaining with so many special innings. Bye and all the best on his new endeavor post retirement.
It is unfortunate that Laxman has called it a day prematurely when he had been selected for the upcoming New Zealand series. He should have played and silenced his critics by showing his mettle. While class is permanent form is temporary. By his retirement at this untimely juncture he is allowing players like Rohit sharma & co. to replace him who have neither the class nor the temperament. I wish the BCCI takes the initiative to persuade him to continue for some time especially with a number of tests to be played by India in the near future in the interest of the game as a whole and simultaneously take efforts to find a suitable replacement before he can hang his boots. - By S.Raghunathan, Hyd
We saw Srikkanth talking about VVS retirement. Obviously he was happy that the game plan has worked and he could force VVS to retire so that BCCI can now shamelessly induct the Rohit sarma the super failure so that he can play 100 tests without break. Long live BCCI as Ghost of Indian cricket
