Selectors have picked a balanced side for the Australian tour
by Ramesh Naik on Nov 28, 2011 02:19 AM  | Hide replies

I can understand all the selections except saha instead of parthiv patel.
How can they justify his selection when parthiv has proved over and over that he is a wicketkeeper batsman and can also open in emergency. What has saha done except that he is from north east.
Looks like a quota selection for me.

Parthiv is the better batsman without a doubt. So he has been selected for the ODIs in India and maybe he will be selected for the ODIs in Australia too.
Saha is the better wicket keeper and will merely provide a cover for Dhoni who will obviously play all Tests in Australia.

In fact it is a fair & mature decision!

India needs to bat really well
by t xz on Nov 28, 2011 01:05 AM  | Hide replies

The writer makes some general statements like 'Aussies are generally weak against quality off-spin' and how Indian team will make them hop and dance in their own land. With all due respect to Ashwin and Ojha, and despite their great performance at home at WI, they still have a long way to go. We need to see how they perform abroad. The Aussies have some good players of spin in their ranks, Clarke, Hussey. Whether Indian team will make them hop and dance or would it be other way around, time will only tell. There was the same hype about this team before they went to England and we know what happened there. Though the team may be better prepared this time, but lets not jump the gun and write off the Aussie team. Despite their lack of consistency in recent times, they are fighters. They just won a test by chasing 310 against the formidable SA attack. So if India bats to it's strength we can witness a close series.

If India wants to win the Test series against Australia, we need to give up over dependence on batting ands select 5 bowlers. That could be an easier option as Ashwin has shown batting ability too.
The team composition should be
1. Gambhir
2. Sehwag
3. Dravid
4. Tendulkar
5. Laxman
6. Dhoni (Wicket Keeper)
7. Ashwin
8. Ojha
9. Zaheer
10. Ishant
11. Yadav
That would give us 5 frontline batsmen, a wicket keeper batsman, an offspinner, a leftarm spinner, a leftarm medium pacer and 2 rightarm fast bowlers

Dhoni will opt for 6 specialist batsmen in Australia. So Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma will have to be there. If anyone needs to be dropped it should be Ishant. His performances in the recently concluded WI series lacked intensity & zing. He has to put in a lot of hard work to be in the reckoning.

We could give Ishant the benefit of doubt for the first 2 tests and then try out Varun Aaron.

In OZ we don't require 2 spiners. Instead of Ojza Kohli is the right choice.

It is this SAFETY FIRST approach that is the reason for India's poor record of wins abroad!

If a batting lineup of the top 5 and Dhoni along with Ashwin who bats a bit don't deliver the goods, who will. In Australia it is only PERTH which is a truly pacy pitch. All the others including Sydney & Melbourne also offer assistance to spinners too!

Can Tendulkar score a 50 in Australia

Can Tendulakar score a 50 in Australia as he is becoming nervous and is getting himself out of contention to score his 100th ton.

PLAN SUCCESSORS TO SACHIN AND LAXMAN
by damodaran mohan on Nov 27, 2011 03:21 PM

Selectors main objective is to select the best team that is likely to win but is only one part of the job. Equally important is to continuously address issue of succession planning for the team management lead by the coach and the captain to implement on the ground to achieve the objectives of winning and team building. The question is how well Dhoni can execute the plan to achieve the twin objectives especially that of a meaningful succession planning on the A-tour with seniors like Sachin,Laxman and Dravid at the fag end of their career ? Dravid is in top form so he can continue for another yr or two and it should not be difficult to find his successor in due course of time. But what about successors for Sachin and Laxman both of whom are certainly on the terminal decline. The two- some failed once again at crucial time in the 2nd innings at Wankhade with soft dismissals ! Among youngsters Kohli is likely to get his chance but will the others get to play at all ? Add to this Sachin’s ‘monkey’ of the 100th century which is refusing to get off the back! Now Sachin’s entire circus of expectations and media hype is getting shifted to Australia with all the related jarring distractions like the needle stuck LP record of …oh….missed again….! Isn’t Sachin becoming a liability increasingly ? It is time for someone in BCCI to muster courage to tell him that it cannot go on indefinitely ? Unless Sachin and Laxman are rotated in

NO LONG TERM PLANNING
by easwar raghunathan on Nov 27, 2011 02:47 PM  | Hide replies

Dravid, Laxman, Tendulkar are old warhorses. They will not be part of the next team to Australia, Selectors should have given a new crop of youngsters to develop. Zaheer Khan does not have the fitness to carry for 4 Tests. There is no longterm planning. Srikkanth himself questioned the need of second wicketkeeper earlier, then why he has selected Wridman Saha?, Is he going to go as a Batsman. There is no continuity.

Don't worry! Saha is just a tourist. After the test series they will call Parthiv.

Dhoni carrying the finger injury and it is a long tour which needs a specialist wicket keeper. Otherwise we are risking Dravid as a second keeper.
