Yeah.. we saw sachin captaincy in the qualifier 2.
1. Choosing to bowl after winning the toss
2. Starting with some sundry bowler instead of Malinga...
3. Bajji in #3 slot...

Thank god he was just a player in the team....

Lost 5 out of 7.
CSK was always a strong side at home irrespective of captaincy

Yes let MI keep on beating CSK, and let CSK keep on winning IPL trophy. CSK surely wouldnt mind conferring best captain title to Sachin.

Dhoni beat RCB twice in the play off and finals. RCB beat MI. So Vettori is a better captain than Sachin and Dhoni is a better captain than Sachin. Which implies, Dhoni is the best of the three.

If you read newspapers and hear cricket commentaries from experts, you will realise that captains of all international teams are now forced to maintain their cool and calm, after Dhoni has made it desirable trait of captains. Not for nothing is he praised as captain cool, captain marvel, captain with Midas touch.

Even in the finals yesterday, a few lapses were made by CSK fielders. But MSD only told in general terms about this in the post match interview. Contrast this with Sachin shouting at Rohit Sharma for backing up at the non-striker's end and getting run out (that too after Sachin had taken a few strides from the striker's end) and make him cry in the players dug out in MI's eliminator match against KKR.

Learn facts and make observations before commenting dear koni!

By the way,

1. Dhoni was not in Indian team when Sachin was captain.

2. Ganguly was captain when Dhoni made it to Indian team. Ganguly was no doubt a better captain than Sachin, but Dhoni has put Ganguly in shadow with both results and demenour.

3. Dravid was captain when Dhoni took over captaincy. I think no cricket fan wants to even remember Dravid the captain, though Dravid the test batsmen is an alltime great, perhaps greater than Sachin.

4. As for tests, Kumble held the mantle briefly before Dhoni took over. Dhoni has built up on the silent aggression of Kumble and taken it to a new, higher plane and Kumble himself would be happy to acknowledge it.

CSK is underrated (and not often covered) by star-gazing media
by Sakthivel Nayakan on May 29, 2011 11:06 AM  | Hide replies

It is better to be thought lucky and manage to win each time than be thought extremely talented but manage to lose each time.

It is sad that the north/south perception and attitudes are still prevalent in the media and the CSK (who have been consistent at winning in the past 4 years) are not shown the type of adulation and starry eyed reports that are given to other Movie star based franchises like Kings X1, Royals or KnightRiders.

Mumbai Indians for all their star players and coverage , have not shown themselves to be anywhere in the same strata as the CSK.

Dhoni has shown that he can win anywhere/any type of game. He might not (and probably is not) the best batsman or WK but sure is the ideal captain for now.

Sachin seems to be the poster boy for having the skill for personal play but not learning anything over the course of 20 years to become a better captain/manager of people. This is not a fault but either folks keeps expecting him to be so and thrust him into it or maybe he has a personal failing in accepting that role to see if he could succeed in it at least once.

I agree with Sakthi.. considering ur argument of one captain learning from another.. sachin learnt from Azhar and was he able to convert that in to a success? the whole cricketing world knows how big a failure he was as a captain.. and the same dhoni learnt it from sachin and ganguly (according to you).. and he has got the world cup home for us after 28 years.. whats ur logic man? you can be a sachin supporter but don't talk like a lunatic with no logic.. dont talk abt knowledge bcos from the way u are commenting it seems like you have never been to school..

dhoni is not only a better captain than sachin he is also a better batsman than sachin. sachin is only a flat track bully who needs flat tracks and easy conditions to score well. all his scores have come when conditions are easier whenever there is crisis or pressure situations the nerves get to him and he crumbles. dhoni scores whenever the chips are down, whenever there is a crisis/desperate situation on the basis of his winning/positive and never-give-up attitude and hunger for win he comes up with a remarkable batting display where players who have a better record, better talent and technique fail.

just because of his winner attitude india are doing so well since he blasted his way in the indian team.

all of sachin's centuries have come in friendly situations with easy to moderate targets. whenever presented with good bowlers, difficult pitch and intimidating targets he invariably fails and it is left to other 10 tough people to get going and more often than not they do just that....

It is a standard failing in India (and maybe everywhere?)- if someone excels at individual play , they are elevated to a manager role even if they are not good at strategy/personnel skills and other requisite abilities.

This applies to any field but is more obvious in a public spectacle when we see someone like Sachin fail at being a cricket captain.

He should be treated as an individual player and not called up on for decisions or anything resembling management. That will allow him to be a better contributor to the team.

In a way what you say is true. Mumbai Indians failed not because of other teams but because of their failure to use their own strengths. They failed to use Harbhajan as a batsmen, as well as kieron pollard not given the chance to bat at the top of the order. Most often these guys were sent so late, they couldn't save their side, it was too late. Harbhajan bats well and most often hit sixers than the regular batsmen. Tendulkar seems to be happy if he bats well, at least he gives you the feeling that it's all over since he is out. He doesn't make the changes that's needed in fielding or batting line up depending on the situation. When Dhoni comes to the ground, you know he is going to hit sixers, you know he is going to jack up the score and defend even the lowest total, I never seem to get the feeling with Tendulkar. And you have one of the best bowlers on the team, lasith malinga. Imagine what Dhoni can do with a bowler like Malinga. Sad, mumbai indians are wasting talent.

So that shows Dhoni manages to bring the best out of his players that they always play the innings of their lifetime under him. Signs of a great captain. Why Sachin and others cant do that?

Dhoni has exceptional man management skills.

Its difficult and at times virtually impossible to handle subcontinent players in a team sport. Thats what makes captaincy a lot more tougher.

Wonder whats special this guy offers in the dressing room to bring that winning touch. The end results seem to defy imagination.

An exceptional test case for MBA students.

1. He leads from the front
2. He trusts his people to do the right thing
3. He does not "instruct" senior players - he collaborates
4. He gives chances to talented players when they are down in the dumps

I am not sure whether I agree with the 1, 2 and 4 above because even past captains were good at these qualities.

I think he is a real good motivator for players.
