Defensive mentality

India team management definitely got it wrong this time. We are World Cup winners. Even if nagative bowling tactics are taken into account, 84 runs in 90 balls with Dravid, Lakshman, Kohli and Dhoni in ranks, was definitely attemtable at least. Even if we had lost few more wickets in the process, it was not difficult to survive 90 balls and play out a draw. If Fidel Edwards could play 100 balls, our remaining 7 wickets could definitely do it. Even if we had lost it and got the result 1-1, no one was going to say, West Indies defeated India. The whole world knew that despite not having Sachin, Sehwag, Gambhir and Zaheer, India dominated the entire West Indies tour, be it T20, ODI series or Test series. Dhoni showed the courage to declare in the second test, and faultered when there was 90% chance of India winning the series 2-0 on the final day of the tour.

Y didnt you mention Harbhajan in the batting line up??? Dhoni could have experimented to bring him early and if he gets out, then the remaining players could have looked for a draw...

Dhoni totally wrong in approach...
by Rajesh Shetty on Jul 12, 2011 09:19 AM  | Hide replies

It does not matter if the test match ends up in a draw after the end of the remaining 15 overs. Having said that 5.6 asking rate was definitely not very steep for this lineup. I think even the slow batsmen like Dravid and Laxman would have got about another 40-45 runs in the next 10 overs. With wickets in hand, what prevents a side from chasing the remaining 45 runs in the next 5 overs ? Never mind if u lose a couple of wickets then, the same offer could still be made in the end. And no one would blame Dhoni if they failed to get those runs in the last few overs, given the fact that it was a test match where u could get away with widish deliveries. But the moot point is ...as a captain of a World No. 1 Test team, did u even try ? Bcos in cricket, one never knows..even a small snick sometimes ends up in a six or a four...Did this same Dhoni throw up the towel in last years IPL when almost 50 runs were needed in less than 3 overs ? And did they not win it then ?...Did he give victory a fair chance now...? The answer is simply 'NO'..:) Shame on u Dhoni.

India does not deserve to be at No 1 spot in test rankings... We miss Sehwag severely in the 3rd test match... Dhoni is a captain who does not want to take risks... When Australia dominated the world in test matches, they would have done anything to win a test match...

My friend it is easier said than done. Yes I agree Dhoni took a defensive approch as threre no hitters playing in the team like Shewag or Yuvi then it is proper to settle for draw. Amongst the batsmen that were mentined only Dhoni and to a certain extent dravid can make a bit faster scoring. In doing so if they perish then the defeat is certain. Kohli is considered a fast scoring batsmen after his recent performances, and then the other option was Gambir. My opinion is that perhaps Dhoni was right was right in settling for a draw. What did even the great Gavaskar do in late seventies against a 2ngrade Australian and WI teams, after winning in one test he used sttle for dtaws to ensure the series is won by India. As there was no media to express then you all commenting now like this. If there are few hitters and also backup batsmen who incase of difficulty can hold the innings then one can go for chase. Even Kapil who is suppose to be an agrresive captain he also did the same thing many times. Perhaps all captains have more less same kind of approch. If one comments that shame on nu Dhoni... it is difinitely childish definitely not a matured thinking. Thanks.
