Yes, it was Kris who established how important it was to strike in First 15 overs ! Sri Lanka excelled on that strategy in 1996 World Cup and walked home with cup !

Srikkanth and Viv. Richards
by periyasamy r on Feb 18, 2011 05:59 PM  | Hide replies

Srikkanth and Viv. Richards are the teachers for present blasters, at that time, when Viv. Richards and Srikkanth were playing all captains worrried for field set up.. their batting style simply marvelous...
Kapil, Imran and Iron botham were the top all rounders ... they have remarkable history in Cricket game ....

Although his record as an alrounder was nothing short of iron those days, his name was 'Ian' (not Iron) botham.

Very ordinary

Srikkanth was a very ordinary player. No consistency.Had he belonged to today's era,he wouldn't have played for India.Players like Srikkanth, shastri played for a number of years because in those days selection used to be on reputation and not on performance. But he is a good man.Very simple.

Fully in agreement with you. You can name few more like Narendra Hirwani, Pranab Roy, Brijesh Patel etc

Hirwani? Man who had 16 wkts in his first match. Not only that in the last test which he had played he had taken 5 wkts in an inning. But alas, he had never selected for a test match inspite of such splendid performance in his last played innings.

For Brijesh Patel, I don't agree with you dear. It was Brijesh's century in West Indies, which won India a test match in 1976 chasing a total of more than 400 in last innings ! That was the first time it so happened that any team won chasing a total of 400 in a test match ! Perhaps you left one Parthasarthy Sharma who was in NOWAY an international match player.

In that test match, both Gavaskar and Vishwanath hit centures and Brijesh scored somewhere around fifty!

If Kris Can't who can?
by RC on Feb 18, 2011 03:02 PM  | Hide replies

This was one famous line written for Srikkanth in a series down under in the 90's. He surely was the first fellow to hit the aerial shots-- rightly pointed out by the author that the greatbatch's, jayasuriyas etc followed Srikkanth. The best thing about him was " he was uncomplicated in his approach"-- it did not matter to him if he was on 92,95 or 99-- he never played for a century. I still remember one of his cricket shows on Sun Tv-- he mentioned the day he felt he was not timing the ball well-- he just thought to himself better try pinch hitting rather than stay at the wicket and consume balls. he said it was always better to get 40 off 40 balls rather than 85 off 150 balls. At his peak-- if he got out cheaply India ended up on 210-220, when he got his act together India easily made 250-270. Salute to you Sir!

too much overrated
by Sanjay Pahuja on Feb 18, 2011 02:57 PM  | Hide replies

Silly article - this was a cricketer truly overrated. A batsman who would shine only once in 20 matches with a 50 score , score just 4 centuries in entire career and hardly have any consistency like Sehwag or even Ganguly.
Its a sheer nonsense that such a coverage is being given to this good for nothing person.

but remember he was India's best limited overs batsman and had more runs than anybody untile Azhar broke that later in 1990's

You are dumb to comment on this--- seems you did not read the article well. Clearly mentioned 4 centuries but 25 times he got out at high scores and that too caught at the boundary. Main reason he was not selfish and never played for centuries unlike some others. His opening partnerships with Ravi Shastri then Sunil Gavaskar are one of the very best for india in ODI's. Half knowledge is dangerous!!! Read well before you open your filthy mouth.

He never played for centuries. He played for fun. In the process he landed up with an average of approximately 29 in both forms of the game. Comparing him with world class players like Sehwag and Ganguly makes no sense.

Who told you to make a comparison? You just cannot compare that era of cricket with this one. Those were the days when 250 runs on board were like 350 of today. Srikkanth was at that point of time a quick scorer rather a pinch hitter and you cannot expect a pinch hitter to perform every passing match. get your stats right!!

One innings I remember

It must have been a series in Australia. We were listening to radio commentary. It was a test match. This guy was at 20 odd when I got up and by the time I completed brushing my teeth (I am sure I should not have taken more than 15 minutes), he had raced to 60 odd. You would get a heart attack at the way he played. He was a real entertainer. No hold barred. May not have been technically correct but it gave a raw joy watching him bat

in fact srikkant became his bunny in 1989 series in pak.
akram himself was at his best. srikkant had limitations, this was fully exploited by akram.
