Days before the most-awaited tournament of the year is to start, activists on Thursday raised a stink over the revamp of the Wankhede stadium, which is scheduled to host three matches of the World Cup.
Alleging that the stadium revamp didn't happen in accordance with the sanctioned plans, activists demanded that the irregularities be rectified before the World Cup to ensure that no untoward incident occurred.
Former IPS officer Y P Singh said that the stadium was a sitting on a time bomb with no evacuation plan in place and lack of necessary open space. He alleged that various government agencies, including the BMC and the Ministry of Environment and Forests, had turned a blind eye to the irregularities and given environment clearance at the behest of a senior NCP politician.

"In just one meeting held at the Sahyadri guest house on December 23, 2007, all kinds of changes were made. The height of the stadium was increased from 16.03 m to 29 m. There was no mandatory open space in the earlier stadium but none was created even in the renovated one. Going by the norms, one-thirds of open space is required to be left open for every construction. But there is zero open space here," Singh said.
He also pointed to the fact that three access roads that were shown in the approved plans do not exist on the ground. "Two access roads from the university ground and one from the hockey ground, each 6 m wide, were shown in the sanctioned plans, but neither exist. This could cause a major problem in case of a disaster-like situation," Singh said. "Moreover, there are FSI violations. There is also a violation in the construction of the BCCI headquarters on land reserved for a recreation ground. It is a commercial structure, and while seeking permission, it was shown to be housing facilities for indoor cricket. They also showed 3,370 parking lots in the plan, but they have not provided any," Singh added.

A PIL detailing these violations and more is pending in the HC.
Ratnakar Shetty, treasurer of the Mumbai Cricket Association and director of the World Cup, said that all the changes that have been done were legal." I would not like to comment further," he told TOI.
