Even Lara and Ponting like great batsman couldn't score good runs in India. Outside subcontinent his batting average is 29.74 which is better than career average of our previous WKs.

Expectations are too high from Dhoni. He himself set that standard. I hope he will do well in further matches.

Yeah and people look at 50s and 100s as usual. But he does have this confusion about how to bat in tests. Hope he figures it out.

He is in great touch from Eng tour. He will definitely play some good innings here.

Anurag let us make a bet if Dhoni even crosses 25 in second innings. He can never succeed in SA, Australia or England in tests. I agree though he is an excellent ODI batsman.

It is true that dhoni failed in the test series in 2008. But dont forget that after the test series he won for us the tri-series in aus when aus where no. 1 odi team, they were playing at home and were with their full regular team.
In that odi series dhoni scored -
10 matches 9 innings 4 times not out 347 runs 88* highest average 69.40
he was given charge of the indian team with only sachin (senior) in the team who was a miserable failure in the league matches making 190 odd runs in 8 innings with about 23-24 average. It was because of batting of dhoni, gambhir, rohit and our new inexperienced bowling attack with which he won the series. the seniors ganguly, kumble, dravid, laxman had gone back after the test series. even zaheer did not play and sehwag did not play all matches. in such circumstances it was dhoni who played well on australian pitches. his scores in that tri-series were 37, 88*, 17*, 31, 37, 50*, 36, DNB (in legue matches) and 15* and 36 (in best of 3 finals). As you can see he was one of the mainstays of indian batting and in that tri-series did not got out even ONCE under score of 30.
if people think that he was failure in tri-series and played no part in our tri-series win I have nothing more to say...

Test cricket is for men, ODI mickey-mouse cricket is for kids. How conveniently you shifted his performance in Tests (which is the topic), to his performance in ODI cricket. That's cuz you know how much of a hopeless case he is outside the sub-continent in Tests, as evident by that average of below 30. Take that, and eat it!!!!

dire straits, the topis is ALSO that he cannot play well on away soil, especially eng, sa and aus...but it is wrong he has played well before in eng sa and aus and not ONLY in odis...he has played some good test innings also in these 3 countries...if you want to shut your eyes to those innings what can anybody do?
Re: hi
by Varun on Dec 28, 2011 11:58 AM
yeah. He needs to learn how to pace his innings in tests. He looks totally confused as to whether go for attack or hold back. He needs to come up the order.
Re: hi

BTW well said about the tri series. People only look at 50s. I still remember the innings where he got run out when we were closing in on a victory against aussies, of coz tks to our bowling who restricted aussies to an achievable total. He needs to find a way to do the same in tests. Time will tell.

govinda i never made such a claim. if you think dhoni is equal to don bradman i cannot do anything about it....
Re: dhoni fans
by Varun on Dec 28, 2011 11:50 AM
hehe. You mean the expected behavior from sachins fans ? Well i would let dhoni deal with the problem. If that persists for long the corrective measures need to be taken. He needs to learn how to pace his innings in tests. That is the big issue, more than the technical one which can be overcome to an extent by shot selection. He should bat up the order and select a relatively easy series to start doing it so that temperament can be learned.

In Eng,he avgs 39 as compared to 96 in Bangladesh,59 in Pak and 43 in India.Away from subcontinent ,he is gr8 in NZL who are not the best test side right now(compared to the one they had under stephen fleming time).
Re: Re: Re: Re: Dhoni

so you want nothing less than 50 average from dhoni against all countries and in all countries...correct...
really high expectations you have from somebody who you claim is not good...
THE STATISTICS SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. NONE OF THE PLAYERS FROM YOUNG BRIGADE HAS REALLY FIRED OVERSEAS. EVEN TODAY DURING OVERSEAS TOUR THE BULK OF THE LOAD IS STILL TAKEN BY SACHIN,DRAVID,LAXMAN,ZAHEER AND VIRU. INDIA SHOULD CURTAIL THE NUMBER OF T 20 GAMES

Make him a non-playing captain. His idea is "I am the captain and shall only instruct the fellow team members."
Re: Dhoni
by Varun on Dec 28, 2011 11:51 AM
He is a technically average batsman but in practice a very effective one as demonstrated in ODIs. He needs to learn how to pace a test innings. In ODIs he has his formula that works pretty well. Tests is a different animal.

If he is not good in tests then why does he not give chance to Dinesh Karthick who is technically better than him in tests.
