Best test innings and one-day innings
by rajashi ghosh on Oct 12, 2010 06:43 PM  | Hide replies

For me, the best test innings by an Indian batsman goes to Laxman for his 281 in Eden Gardens and the best one-day innings goes to Sachin for the two spectacular innings he played against Australia in Sharjah in 1998.

Very crucial innings
by rajashi ghosh on Oct 12, 2010 06:40 PM

Remember, India was tottering at 39/2. Sachin's 200 was very very important as it took India out of trouble along with Murali's 100 and has put India in the driver's seat.

Despite getting a double ton, for which Tendulkar was playing, this Test too, as has been the case with all Sachin’s record-scoring innings, will either be drawn or lost. What a shame.

Ricky Ponting's innings is more crucial and meaningful than Sachin's. It is Australian skipper's knock that has set the match so nicely.

What a joke.

How many times Bradman or Ponting opened for Aus ?

How many times Richards or Lara opened for West Indies ?

Before arrival of Sehwag, India had a scarecity of good openers and Sachin often came to bat at a score of 20/2 or 30/2 in about 10 overs so the ball was still quiet new. Similar thing happened in this match.

Sachin scored 200 thats why we have a chance to win the match, otherwise we would have been praying for a miracle to happen to save the test.

huhumba lulumba, dont write nonsense. during gavaskar time gavaskar was alone 50 plus average player in india team. he opened for india in tests. and he had to come right from the 1st ball. he also scored many centuries. against best wi attack he scored with 65 average overall and 70 runs average in wi. he did not have luxury that sacihn enjoys. no helmets during his time. he later started to use skull cap. when later he started to play down the order in one test he came at no. 4 vs wi. at that time score read 2 down for 0 runs. vivian richards even cracked a joke. he said, ''maan you come at no. 1 or no. 4, the score is still zero!''

gavaskar was under much more expectations and pressure when he walked to bat than sachin. his best support came from vishwanath, mohinder and vengsarkar. but they were not a patch on todays batsmen. all these 3 players were early 40s average players.

but sachin has an great advantage over gavaskar. he has very less pressure. he has helmets and similar protection gear. he has support of four 50 plus average batsmen like sehwag, gambhir, dravid, and laxman (if you exclude his first 2-3 years when he was not so successful) at other times he also had very good players like azhar, ganguly and now he even has dhoni with 50 plus batting average is captain, and 40 plus average overall.

many times sachin comes to bat when sehwag, gambhir have put opponent attack to shreds and the ever reliable dravid at the other end.

sachin in pressu

Take this test

Aus 479
India 38/2 when Sachin came to bat and he scored 214.

Also, it is true that Gavaskar did not have helmet but in Gavaskar's time there was no video recording. Now bowlers have the advantage of seeing the videos of the batsman and to find their weakness.

Also Gavaskar had the liberty of focussing on tests alone (cannot remember a good one day innings of Gavaskar), Sachin through out his career had to focus on both tests and one days.

But, no disrespect to Gavaskar, Gavaskar and Sachin are beyond doubt two greats of Indian Cricket.
