Ponting and Tendulkar
by Aaloo Prasad on Nov 10, 2010 05:20 PM  | Hide replies

There is nothing wrong in getting inspirations from anyone, but Ponting must know that he cannot continue to follow Sachin. For one thing, Ponting faces a real danger of being dropped from the Aussie side, if he underperforms for a certain period, whereas Sachin faces no such danger.
Secondly, Ponting has to retire sooner or later, whereas Sachin is never going to retire!

And who and what are you? Who gave you the authority to decide who is better than whom?
Why should others accept your verdict?

It is such a stupid thing, few of us here are really going out of context & posting some stupid comments comparing our own cricketers. Now the topic of discussion should actually be on Ponting & Sachin on a broader sense. Be sportive guys....Both are great cricketors in their own sense. Do not post negative comments on both of them. Praise them for what they have achieved being what they are! Not all of us can be a PONTING or SACHIN. So, we better be good to those who has accomplished something that we couldn't in our lives.

please stop comparing the two greats of modern cricket. If Sachin has scored more runs and has made many records, Ricky has won most test matches as both player and captain, and also has won two ODI world cups as captain.
Both are exceptionally gifted batsmen, and yes..we are extremely fortunate souls to have watched these two along with ofcourse Brian Lara.

two hoots !! how can you compare with Ricky and Sachin. Sachin was, is and will be great. Ponting won only when Mcgrath, Wanre, Gilchrist & Hayden were there. Not any time else.

And what has Sachin won??Sachin as captain has lost even when there were Dravid, Ganguly,Laxman, Azhar, Kumble, Srinath and Zaheer in the team.
Come on kid...Ponting has achieved much more as a player than what Sachin has ever dreamt of. On the other hand, Sachin has so many records against his name, which Ricky can just dream of.

First of all ,remember Sachin is a rarest of rare sports person . You should know more abot yourself . You are a very attacking batsman - with age your reflexes slow down - whether you believe or not .So you need to adopt to your body - so may be you need to adopt a new strategy ,plan & execution - even it may mean changing your batting position come a step lower .This is must because the team is used to your attcking play and the score board movement because of you .Now you are out often the team gets in to a shell. India rarely -if it is chasing a stiff run rate and Sewag fails - which is often happens while chasing ,but when he puts some runs quickly others can take the game to a desired end .
Also do not brush others comments - take what you feel is right and let others have their views like mine .

Thanks Captain

For giving this rational statement about sachin. After 35, people and critics normally link your failure with age, In my opinion which is partial true that at 35 you gain so much experience that in spite of having weak reflexes you can play well. One of the best technical batsman in the world sunil had started playing aggressively after 35 he could do so because he got so much experience that he would know how much ball would move after pitching and same about length of the ball. So riky don’t worry about age you carry we want classy player like you Jack,Sachin,VVS And Rahul. Good Morning to all comrades

The comparison is done between Ponting and Sachin, need not always consider only the batting, runs, average etc. Ponting is a Captain and has taken Aussies to greater heights by winning world cups, remaining their team at Top position both in tests ODIs for more than a decade. Had Sachin been a Captain he wouldn’t have achieved any of those records which are under his belt, he was given an opportunity to captain Indian team what was his average.
Under taking the tremendous pressure and guiding a team of 10 people making vital decisions on field is not easy. Taking this logic Ponting is much better than Sachin…!

A team's success can't always prove the captain is good.

Though taking your point, Ponting "might be" a better captain than Sachin, not better batsman.

Though I consider Ponting a better overall cricketer since he is a better fielder and captain and has kept himself injury free for better part of his career when compared to Sachin.

So then Sourabh how about taking into count the wickets taken as well along with the batting and fielding criteria ?

Moreover, Sachin has had to face McGrath, Gillespie and Warne who were top class bowlers, as compared to Ponting who had the luxury to bat against Indian bowlers.

Also Sachin has scored against Akram, Waqar at their peak, and against greats like Imran Khan, Richard Hadlee, etc.

So would those also be taken into consideration ?

Again, agreed that Ponting is a captain with a better record due to the team that he "inherited" which consisted of Hayden, Gilchrist (terrific opening batsmen), McGrath, Gillespie (deadly opening bowling), Warne, etc. as compared to the unpredictable team that Tendulkar got to captain. For more proof on it, as mentioned, chk Australia's records before and after retirement of these greats.

Sunitha, Ponting was leading a great team (McGrath/Warne/Hyden et al) while Sachin was leading a bunch of average cricketers. See how Ponting is doing as a capt now that he has an Avg team.

Your logic is just tunnel vision.

Sachin may not be a good Capt but as a Batsman he is beyond compare.

If comparision is not done between cricketers in terms of batting, runs and average, what else shud be the criteria ? Height and weight of both of them ?

As for pressures, I think u shud read Kirsten's interview in cricinfo, where he has said that when he used to hear about the pressures of Indian cricketers, he did not expect such immense pressure when he joined the team as a coach.

To put it simply so that u can understand facts, to be a cricketer in a country of a billion that considers cricket as its religion is FAR MORE pressure than captaining a country which has hugely talented and sucessful players like Warne, McGrath, Hayden, Langer, Gilchrist etc. If you would like any more proof of it, just compare Ponting's performance and Australia's achievements when these greats were playing and after they retired.

Will sincerely hope that some sense has leaked in.

Assuming you are a girl, i spare you for your ignorance of not knowing what it is to play under the expectation of billions of cricket loving public. It is not the same for Ponting. If you really know something about cricket, you would agree to me. Else will come back with unnecessary comments trying to justify your not so intelligent thoughts on cricket.

Do not blame sachin for not being a very successful captain. For that matter, India in its 60 years of cricket history has not had many successful captains, primarily because, we hardly play as a team. Ego issues and internal politics are plenty in our team and of late lethargy and reckless nature among the youngsters such as Yuvraj, Rohit, Sreeshanth are making it worse. That is not the case with the Aussies. You make any tom, dick and harry as captain of Australia, he will have a good record because every Aussie player will strive for excellence when they hit the ground. They may be struggling now, but their competitive sprit has no equal. With such great competitors and team players around, it is no surprise that Ponting is successful too. India not producing successful captain has more to do with the "culture" and work ethics.

Ashok,

Your argument does not hold true because Ganguly made almost the same team (which Sachin captained) successful.
The work ethic migh be diff. but culture was same for both Ganguly and Sachin.

I am a huge fan of Sachin the batsman, but he was not successful as a captain and that should be admitted.
