gavskar cannot see bcci getting its act together
by krishna v on Nov 03, 2010 12:51 PM  | Hide replies

he made sure that kapil and others like amarnath, vishwanath are out of the bcci political clout, now that bcci is getting its act together. gavaksar cannot see that happening.then why didnt he bring it up before.few months back when bcci had said they cannot pay ipl governing members crores of money..it was gavaskar who passed the statement.."i will serve indian cricket for free"..what a joke..

My friend,There is no question of politics. BCCI is money earning profit making factory. As they are earning billions of dollars, all the players/coaches are earning crores of ruppees why Indian cricket legend like gavaskar and other should not be taken care? There is no reason why gavaskar should work free for profit making factory/company.
We are not taking care of our cricket legends like gavaskar,kapildev.amarnath. They should be honoured.

Go and check what happened to Kapil Dev and Mohinder Amarnath in the ODIs after the 1983 fluke final vicotry.
West Indies visited India, pulled their pants down winning ODIs 5-0 and 6 test Match series 3-0. The tests would have been also 6-0 had not the little master faced the WI pace battery to score 2 stunning centuries, one rather a double century with the highest score of 236 in one of the matched then. Note, at this time Marshall and Holding were at thier best. Amarnath was made to pay the price, at least Kapil had success with the ball. Jimmy score only one run in 6 innings of 3 matches and was dropped. In the last test match Sunil Gavaskar scored 236 not out, Kapil declared else he would have gone to score further more. No one on the either side had score a ton.
You think your sarcasm would work against the greatest batsman of India.

Do you remember anything that happened after 1979, or did your brain stop functioning right around that time frame?

Babus not sportive
by bn yalamalli on Nov 03, 2010 06:40 AM

No sportsperson should be humbled by any Sports Official.Babus exist because the sportsmen perform.
This is the second example of BCCI belittling the champions after the great Kapil Dev.
India should progress beyond politics.

In cricket, Test Match is the ultimate calibre of any player. Not ODI..
Again even for this particular ODI, it was the first ever world cup match. The ODI world cup concept was very new. There was no cricket world cup prior to this match ever played. England scored 334 in 60 overs. At that time India was similar to what Kenya is in ODI Cricket. India was completely shocked by the pace of which England was playing. The only hope India calculated was to stay not out and it might help in the overall averages since the next two matches were with East Africa (which we won and Gavaskar score a quick 65 - highest) and NZ. The NZ match was bolted for NZ by the Hadlee Brothers and Glenn Turner who happened to be Sachin Tendulkar of those days in ODI.
Still India Managed to win 1 match that would have been a better than expectation performance as per the situation.
8 Years later we won the world cup. Please see what we had done in WI tour in ODI just before the world cup. And what was Sunil Gavaskars performance. You People keep thinking Kapil Dev was the greatest ever cricketer. He wasnt even mentioned in the greats an era of holding, Garner, Marshall, Roberts, Croft, Lillee, Thompson,Willis etc..
By your towering standards, Balwinder Sandhu and Sandip Patil are better players than Gavaskar. Maan get some serious check on reality. No wonder, for you Ammir Sohail must be a greater player than Brian Lara since Lara never won a Worldcup match.

The second best Indian batsman after Tendulkar ......
by Dire Straits on Nov 03, 2010 12:22 AM  | Hide replies

is Gavaskar. The man averaged 65 odd against the fearsome West Indian team of the 70's and 80's that too without wearing a helmet. Imagine Ganguly batting without a helmet against those West Indian quickies, LOL .............. those bowlers would have eaten him for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

sachin is mighty lucky that he was not in the indian team at that time. otherwise bowlers like marshall, garner, roberts, holding, davis, baptiste, daniel, would have made him take VRS. he would have made scores like mohinder amarnath did in that 1983 series against them when amarnath made 1 run in 6 test innings.

even gomes and richards would have troubled sachin like hansie cronje did later.

Sunil Vaidya:

;-)... so he would at least have faced those great bowlers. What you chose to omit in replying to NG indicates that Dhoni would have preferred not to play cricket at all. And we should not blame him. If the likes of Bollinger, Johnson and Hauritz cause his batting downfall, he would have been wise to choose hockey as a sport instead, if he happened to be in that era... ;-)

I have great respect for Gavaskar. I agree that he is the second greatest batsman. Regarding helmet, he wears a white hat, but I have seen on several occassions, when he lifts his hat, underneath that he has a gear that normally is inside the helmet. I agree it is not the same, I will not bet money on that but it gives enough protection, if a ball hits his head.

Ajay. You are wrong, it was revealed later that the white guard was in fact more injurious to Gavaskar. He only wore that in the last few years before retiring.
However I agree, even if it was injurious, Gavaskar psychologically was thinking it was protecting him and in turn increasing his confidence to play the fast bowlers in later years. He was only lucky that never people like Imran struck on his head. But still, on that front Gavaskars technique was the best, even more than Viv Richards who never wore a helmet too. But please check some videos (readily avaialble on Youtube) where Dennis lilee made a bunny of Viv Richards in Australia hitting him on his body couple of times and then shattering Viv's stumps
