pick a team first

India should pick a team first, then a captain, Dhoni may struggle to hold his place in the team then.

Reasons for India's failure
by binoy mathew on May 18, 2010 02:54 AM  | Hide replies

There are three genuine reasons for Indias failure as pointed out by many..
1. Inability to handle bouncing deliveries
2. Poor fielding
3. Lack of genuine pace bowlers..

Indian players inability to handle short balls hasnt come overnight...It was there from a long time ago..What has the BCCI done to help the indian batsmen? They have continually made slow and flat pitches in india to ensure that scores are always above 300 (now a days around 400) in ODI matches in India...so who is to blame? the players or the administrators???

The poor fielding must be due to the fact that Indians are lazy, not committed like the australians or the south africans and even srilankans. Most of the guys in the current indian team has enough money to survive for atleast another twenty years...so why should they be committed anymore? and also now there is IPL..so what is their priority? Even if they perform badly for india in international matches, they can always come back and perform in IPL and earn some money, so where is the desire to play for the country? Is it now a matter of pride playing for the country or is it just that you are playing because you have been selected..

Lack of genuine fast bowlers has again got to do with the type of pitches prepared in india..Also many fast bowlers when they started their career used to bowl in the 140's consistently...munaf patel, ishant sharma, sreesanth, zaheer khan all used to bowl at more than 140 km/h when they started their career..

Now their speed is around the 128 km/hr mark...its because they want to prolong their career and earn money...so they do not want to risk getting injured and thereby loosing their chance of earning some money...

As always we, indian cricket team fans, make some noise and shout against players when these failures occur in big tournaments. But when these semi gods come back and play against a poor opposition in india and crush them or play against a stronger team on flat pitches (even then we dont win on most occasions as was the case last time australia toured here in india, indians lost the ODI series 4-2) we suddenly think they are world beaters and they are going to be a world class team.. Well the truth is, Indian cricket team never has been good enough...Why dont the Indian cricket team tour australia, south africa or england or new zealand more often? In the last ten years, India may have toured these places once or twice..where as India would have toured srilanka many times, bangladesh many times..if zimbabwe didnt have all these internal issues, india would have toured there also on numerous occasions...

In short, these are just a bunch of ordinary players, who are just tigers at home and lamb away from home...Once Sachin, Dravid and Laxman retire from test cricket and if we dont find suitable replacements soon, we are never going to win even one test away from india...

Yes, who is at fault, whether the BCCI or the players, in my view it is the mistake of spectators who get excited when our heroes hit such great scores at home mpitches and howl on their miserable failures in internationa events

yeah, you guys were right. And in my opinion this Indian team is far better than the previous lot. Without doubt Dhoni is a good captain. But there are limitations for players of the subcontinent such as playing the bouncing ball and fielding. Overseas grounds, even a small ground has a green outfield which will allow players to dive. It can never be done in India, you dive and you go home with bruises. :). I have been playing in the streets and I know that.
And I dont think that BCCI will admit that change pitches overnight. Do they have any plans of revamping pitches with a long time goal in mind? hmmm, if they do that, India will be a force to reckon and not chicken playing bouncers.

Parochialism
by Manjesh on May 17, 2010 05:23 PM  | Hide replies

Indian cricket will only be saved if we do away from Parochialism. All our cricket stars have become so arrogant because they are over pampered and over paid. All these stars came into fore b'coz we do away with parochialism during Ganguly-Wright era.they picked talent and backed them that they b'come real match winners.eg.Sehwag,Harbhajan,Yuvraj,Zaheer,Nehra,etc.Everybody seeing these guys know that they have genuine talent even if they failed in 4-5 matches.Ganguly had the courage to demand the players from selectors whom he thought are genuine match winners. Now that ghost of Parochialism has returned see the way srikanth supports Vijay,Dinesh Karthick etc.Vijay from the on set looks a tiger in home lamb away sort of batsman.Look at the way he played steyn in test matches against south africa.Dinesh karthick every time he keeps wicket make sure that drops atleast 2 catches.Even after good ODI performances Batsman like Kohli is not given oppurtunity in test matches instead Our Chikka selected Badrinath who seems a no shot wonder.why is players such as Manish pandey not considered even after a funtastic domestic season.same applies to Chetheswar Poojara. Each time Dhoni is rested srikanth make sure to pick Karthick.what wrong has parthiv patel done.he scores at will in domestic matches and is a better keeper than Dinesh karthick on any day

I wont blame Srikkanth for selecting Vijay. Considering that Sehwag wasnt playing, India needed an opener for T20 world cup. So, what were the options that Srikkanth had :
1. Murali Vijay
2. Manish Pandey
3. Manoj Tiwari
4. Robin Uthappa
5. Shikhar Dhwawan
Among them only Vijay and Uthappa are serious contenders (agreed Pandey had a great domestic season scoring 900 plus runs but this is just his first season and he struggled bigtime in second half of IPL).
Between Vijay and Uthappa, consider the following facts :
1. Vijay scored far more runs than Uthappa in domestic season
2. Vijay scored more runs than Uthappa in IPL at a comparable strike rate
3. Last time Uthappa played in West Indies (2007 ODI world cup), he struggled badly agaisnt rising deliveries
4. Vijay is a regular opener while Uthappa usually plays in middle order ans is at best a makeshift opener.
So, considering all the facts above it had to be Vijay over Uthappa. Agreed that Vijay had a horrible world cup but Srikanth didnt have the benefit of hindsight while selecting the team.

Good for Indians
by Yoyo Muni on May 17, 2010 04:58 PM  | Hide replies

This useless cricket mania is taking the country in the wrong dierction. Its a good thing for the country that people realized that Indian cricketers are not gods. Stop wasting so much energy and money on this useless thing. We have more pressing issues to worry about. Tendulkar and Dhoni are heros. They just play what they know. They do not scarifice anything for the country. Regard them as any other ordinary people, just with some God given "talent" in something useless. A robot, if properly programmed can far outdo them - to put them on perspective.

Experience Counts
by Nilesh Kadam on May 17, 2010 04:49 PM

For me. Experience counts. Indian selectors presumed that the young guns will prove better than the experience cricketers and hence selected the young champs. You can see the difference yourself. It was just a matter of luck for these young gund whioh clicked in the opening tournament of T20 where Indian won while they also had some experience players in their team and T20 in those days was a begining. Look at the team squad now in this tournament. I think the average years of exp for the players in this year T20 squad with any type of cricket format is around 3 years. The body language is not at like winners, sometimes I feel that they come on thei field directly out of their bed. Lousy, tiring, non-healthy performance. Get the experience in the team with a combination of 70% (exp)-30% (fresh/young champs) and see the difference.
